right. when going for mot test, am I right in thinking if a petrol car was fitted with a cat as new, it needs to be there for the mot and not having one is an instant fail?

or is it after a certain date that it is required?

basically the guy with the escort I am welding tomorrow has asked about a de-cat pipe being made out of the scrap fiesta exhaust I have in the garden.

I don't mind doing the work if he is paying, but I cant see the point in putting de-cat pipe on if he wants to sort the rest of the car out for the mot if its just going to fail cos of the cat. and its not as if he can put the cat back on as he is proposing I just cut the cat off and weld some pipe in place of it

I believe so as the cars tax disc is linked to the emission rating and by removing the cat the emissions are affected.

N reg escort needs a cat or it's a fail simple as that mate.

edit - I can't remember the exact year cats were required by law on cars but it was before a N reg escort. Because it's pre 2000 you can put any crap cheap cat on it though to pass an mot.

Fit the de-cat pipe, charge him...if/when it fails redo the work and charge him again ...win win!

I think it only has to meet emissions requirments if pre Jan 2001.. Doesn't matter how you go about meeting the requirments. Anything newer and you're into type approval.

The emissions are impossible to meet without a cat which means the only way you can go about meeting the requirement is to fit some sort of cat to the escort in question. I have heard an exception well running car can pass the immersions without a cat but I'm pretty sure that is a myth.

Anyway I bet you can get a cat for a n reg escort for £30-40 which would get it through the test unless the engine was really rough.

this will make you laugh. He has managed to bag a job in a garage, somehow. He was telling me while i was trying to get the cat off the megane (ironically), but when i asked him if he could take the inlet off for me to get access to the top nut on the manifold to cat flange he was baffled. Its pretty much 6-7 easy to reach bolts, intake pipe, oil breather pipe and 2 sensors that unclip. He was baffled...

I ended up taking the megane apart to show him how just incase he needs to do it in this garage. im not welding his chassis rail anymore, apparently he is going to get it on a lift and get one of the other guys to teach him to weld.

I think he is going to struggle badly at this job. he has know welding experience at all, he has no knowledge of diagnostics, he is pretty much only good at old golfs and campers

my other neighbour, who used to have a garage and knows his stuff, likes watching him working, said its better than watching tele some days.

as I say, if you put a dead mk2 golf infront of him he would have it running again within the hour, same for a cvh engine escort, or a nova etc, but anything that has a fair amount of sensors on it and he is out of his depth

I saw a mobile welder on a similar program that turned up without a welder. just convinced all his customers that the job didn't nee welding, he had a new compound that was mot friendly and was better than welding.

turned out to be body filler, he was just smearing it over, sanding it back and spraying it

Quite but lets say some MOT places just check the exhaust is sound and it passes the emissions. Which still puts you back to needing a cat on a N reg escort because it won't pass an emissions test still.
