Alternative uses for power steering fluid

I recently had problems with my LR freelander steering making an awful noise which was found to be coming from the power steering pump.

Having removed it & sent it away for refurbishment I was informed it wasn't u/s but the steering fluid had mysteriously become contaminated. On advise from the refurbishers & after refitting the pump the whole system was thoroughly flushed using approx 6 litres of new fluid.

Thankfully thus far the problem hasn't reappeared.

However I am now left with approx 4 1/2 litres of expensive but contaminated steering fluid, I'm reluctant to just discard it, anybody found a use for it other than for car steering racks, such that the contamination is of no consequence

Being as the power steering is a closed system how did the fluid become contaminated and with what??

Sometime it's mistaken for the washer bottle filler so water is poured in.

Not sure with what, but the fluid had a slightly gritty feel. The system had never been topped (by me but had been recently serviced!!!) up from new, the only thing I can think some foreign body was left in during manufacture & then it broke up.

well id hardly use it in or on anything worthwhile if thats the case unless u like oiling things with grinding paste added

It's hardly that expensive. Just ditch it. Wouldn't lubricate anything with gritty feeling oil.

Beard dressing? I have used brake fluid for this with some success.

ATF mixed 50/50 with Acetone makes the perfect penetrating oil. The only thing is, you have to shake it to mix every time because it seperates in the container once stood.

the oil has crap in it. a bit more in the atmosphere wont harm

I know someone that topped up the power steering thinking it was the brake fluid and vice versa had to drain and flush both systems and to top it off it was the wrong steering fluid anyway

Hmm scrooge or just frugal just bin it happy in the knowledge it cant cause you any more problems

I used to use battery acid to control my nasal hairs, worked well but I think I must have got used to it coz I couldnt smell it in the end!! I think Michael Jackson used the same method

PSF is usually only dextron 2 oil,and should be cheap enough, anyway, oil with grit in it, isnt oil its liquid grinding paste--- THROW IT!

You could keep it for use as a lubricating fluid to use on a sharpening stone. The grit wouldnt matter there. (would it ?)

Could be filtered with a coffee pot paper filter.
