Halfords offer

Reading this mornings Daily Mirror and notice an advert from Halfords for their 150 piece toolkit reduced from £199.99 going for £99. Went in the nearest outlet here in Stoke to find it is not advertised there and they are not on display. But one of the staff found one and swiped it and sure enough it was mine. Lifetime guarantee and contains a great selection of kit. 1/4, 3/8 1/2 drive with all the usual torx allen and other sockets double depth and double ratchet spanners etc. Well worth the cash and I have found they are very good quality too.

Its a great set, ive broken a few pieces and they have replaced them there and then in the shop.

not when they have the stuff on offer. I tried that once and the offer price was still cheaper than what i could have got it using the trade card - trade card takes the discount off the original/usual item price, not the offer price

I got a ratchet set that was 50% off, down to £25 for £12 when used my card about 6 weeks ago

Trade card doesn't work with other offers, it cancels the offer before applying trade discount.

My local usually tries the transaction both ways for me to get me the best deal

I concur with the majority about the trade card. It is supposed to be only on their normal prices. Anything on offer it should not be able to be used.

Always check, sometimes the offer price is still more than the trade card price

SNAP! They are a handy set. I've had one at home for a while and recently bought one for work too (the £99 offers are very regular).

The socket sizes are annoying - you need to be 19mm before they become half inch drive. Also the torx bits will snap instantly if you use them anywhere near a rusty Peugeot but the rest seems OK. The earlier boxes were better - each side of the box used to form part of the handle so you could hold it together while you carried it. I don't like the idea of relying on the nasty plastic clips on the recent ones to prevent 150 tools falling on the ground.

PS - can anyone recommend reasonable quality torx sockets? I searched google for quality torx sockets and Machine Mart came up first. Didn't look any further.

Same set here, make sure you torque up something and undo a few times with the 3/8 ratchet as they are known to jam and some branches will only replace within 30 days of purchase as they class it as a moving part and therefore not under lifetime guarantee. My local has drawer full recon ones they swap out.
Re the torx, teng tools ones have served me well but were bought years ago so no doubt quality has dropped since on the new stock.

That wee swivel bar is new in the set that would be handy.
They seem to have left out a couple of spanners instead. My set has 8mm to 19mm with everything in between.

Facom, teng, bluepoint and sykes pickavant. Usual suspects.

I have a sykes set and have used them with the windy impact gun (though I shoudlnt I know) from time to time. I broke a T50 but I was using a massive crackbar with it.

Bahco ones are rusty mini proof which is more than I can say for the old red Britool ones

Also, the non security ones without the hole in the middle are much stronger

I got a set the last time the offer was on, first time out the 3/8 ratchet jammed, took it back and they replaced the innards, second time out used a 13mm deep socket and the 3/8 ratchet to try and undo an exhaust clamp, the 12 point socket slipped and the ratchet hit me right on the bridge of my nose 3/4" gash, after I came round, I got up off the floor of the pit and put the nice shiny tool back in the case and kept it in the corner of the garage. I think I will give the set to my brother for Christmas (he`s been a right pain in the arris for me this year ).
Its a poor craftsman that blames his tools I know but I will only use my 6 point deep sockets from now on.

I went in to buy a Halfords 3/8 ratchet. Ratchet was £19.49 or i could get the same ratchet in a Halfords Advanced (professional) 25 piece tool kit, which was on offer for £19.99!

Guess which i did ?

ps: As has been mentioned before the ratchet itself, is not included in the lifetime gurantee.

Might have been the ratchet mechanism that slipped if you had plenty of force on it, rather than the socket?
I know the ratchet has slipped on me a few times. I wouldnt blame the ratchet those times as i really shouldnt have been applying the force i was.

That's why I never use a ratchet to "crack" a nut, breaker bar first, then the ratchet to remove it.
