2k metallic problem

Hi I'm hoping someone can shed some light on a problem I have got. I have been using a 2k metallic paint from nu-agane off eBay. First thing I thought was strange is its a 2k gloss not base and clear. But my problem is that I have been flatting it down and it has gone blotchy. These marks weren't there prior to the paint being flatted. It has been done with 1500 grit wet and dry. It almost looks like I have rubbed through a clear coat to a base coat as such. It seems to have lost its metallic finish. I have tried to attach a pic. The company it has come from say it doesn't require clear coating. Any ideas?

If it doesn't require clear coat then it's a gloss and you never rub down metalic gloss mate, you have now cut the top off the flakes and you will need to re coat to cure it, rub the lot over first though before re coating to get a good key.

Never used metallic gloss before. Always thought it was base and clear.

So if its not to be flatted how are you supposed to get rid of defects? I have used base and clear with no adverse effects before.

Exactly, got to spray in a clean booth with extractors, that's why base and clear is much easier. I am spraying cellulose metalic gloss at the moment so I know exactly what you are saying, you can get lucky and find that some of the bits wipe off with a tack cloth after you have let it flash for say 20 or 30 minutes

I've been using this today(was told its a ford focus colour) from nuagain and its a basecoat needing a clear on top.

Not sure what they have given you there but metallic basecoat is 1K, the clear over the top is 2K, the reason its gone blotchy is you have hit the flakes when flatting.

I did a merc van with 2K metallic(dark silver) never again it was a nightmare, trying to get the overlap lines out of it as you are trying to put a drop coat on and still have a gloss finish.

id say its good stuff for small things or railings ect ect.

Just passing on information an expert gave me, that is you don't do a drop coat on gloss, only on base coat

Keithski: defiantly 2k as I checked with the company as I thought it was strange to be 2k.

Snooper sorry not sure on eBay number as a customer ordered it. I think if you search eBay for metallic jade green it comes up.

Flapdisk, it's being sprayed in a booth with extractors etc, has a little orange peel so wanted to get rid hence the flatting of the paint.

its a 1 shot paint, as langy pointed out you've hit the metallic in the paint, bin it and go to a reputable paint supplier using the paint code and get some C.O.B, the stuff you have will never be matched if you need to do a repair.
it also seems expensive when you add in the postage

Yes totally agree, I don't normally drop coat on gloss, but as a rule I don't use 2K metallic as you can imagine trying to do a full flat side of a sprinter van with 2K metallic and not get a tiger strip effect is a bit of a pain,so had to do some sort of drop coat to blend it in, what an absolute pain in the **** tho!!


as an example I painted this with the same gun and the same brand of paint and got no dry lines or dark and light patches but as soon as its 2K metallic ahhhh it a nightmare.

Yeah think I'm going to go to my normal paint shop and get it in base. If I do get base can I flat this paint back to smooth then put the base on top without needing to prime first?

Rob, when you did the paint you also suffered with the stripes? When you put a drop cost on how did you not get orange peel/dry spots etc? I came a bit further away to try to stop the stripping but ended up with orange peel.

you should have no problems doing that I think I would leave it a day after flatting though just to be sure its cured right through

Funny that the bloke supplied me with the paint when I did his van I did warn him but that's what he wanted, and as they say the customer is always right(until it all goes wrong and then the finger get pointed else where)

stripes are caused by uneven coverage, bad gun, bad technique, wrong paint viscosity with a solid colour all but bad coverage can be put right if the effect isn't too bad, putting a drop coat on using gloss will only result in leaving a texture like overspray

I did get stripes with the celly and if I put it on wetter I got orange peel, so I found the answer was to thin it more and back off the pressure a bit and also to spray a final coat which was thinned even more

with celly you're always chasing the edge but it polishes out fine
