Cherry picker

Hi Guys has anybody got a cherry picker to do a couple of jobs,needs to go to about 50ft, one job my wifes boss needs his lights retubing in the garage over the lifts etc , and the guy across the road needs to do some work on his chimney pots, it would make sense to combine the cost between the two, I was just wondering if any body had one in the area deeside north wales etc

Expect to pay 120+vat for delivery and rental on top. We pay about 200 p/w for a moosive one

As above. we hired a sightly special unt in last year for work and Hewdens wanted to charge £500+Vat for the delivery!

A local firm wanted £500 for the whole job (2 weeks) but didn't have one for the time we wanted but i forgot to tell Hewdens that when i rang back to complain about there exterminate rate and they price matched

Your'll need to know the height at which the chimneys are and the required outreach at that height, the lightest self propelled MEWP for 50 feet is probably a HR17 but that stills weighs 5 ton approx so you'll need flat-ish hard ground conditions with good width access.

If you require an even lighter machine then your looking at tracked access machines which could double the rental price.

Training and safety a harness isn't a legal requirement (advised yes but legally...no) if you damage the machine you will be charged for the repair and generally the machine will stay on hire until its repaired...

...and they will barely carry 2 men and tools. Yes I know they are not meant to be a crane, but there are plenty of times we can't carry a small sheet and or some timber without one of us staying on the floor, or up in the air: the problem with staying in the air is 9x out of 10 the reason you need the damn thing is there IS no where to stand.

The 4 wheel steer jobbies are good in tight spots as well.

They can't be pie eaters, we'd of never picked that up with both of us in it. And no I'm not fat we're both 6' and around 90kg wet add a few tools and you're well over 210/220kg. Sounds like stana's going to land with all the damn bells ringing

For a machine that size, we pay 60 quid each way haulage and 140 quid a week. I think the normal rate is 450 quid or so. We pay 10% on top of the hire as unlimited damage waiver...So theoretically we can write the machine off for 14 quid. Seems a good deal to me.
Generally the load sensors are set on the cautious side, I've known machines that won't go up with 2 men and a mag drill in, never mind the little beam that's going to be laid across the cage...They older ones are 'user adjustable' if you know where to look.
Those boys using the MEWP as a crane deserve to the thrown off site.

The load capacity for that machine is select-able (500/1000 LBS) in the basket the load cells are only seeing the 2 guys in the basket, as the clock face is not attached to the basket, but its well within the total load capacity of the machine...

Your 10% damage waiver seemed a good idea to another company that hired a 60ft boom on a 360 chassis, they soon found out it cost them 30,000 GBP to buy it, when they damaged the machine beyond economic repair...

The older machines didn't have any overload system at all

The boys using the MEWP where not overloading it, just not quiet cosher according to HS, and the boss/owner of the company (Arsenal Football Club) was watching, trust me...I met a few WAGS that day (and boy some of them were truly thick, lookers yes brains no).

The machine was at the bottom of a 80 foot deep access shaft, off of here run a horizontal tunnel, plus theres another tunnel that dropped away at a 45 degree angle this machine was used to work on the tunnel roof while the chassis was at 45 degs. And the customer used to tow other machines up and down the 45 deg slope with this machine to another horizontal tunnel below.

Its a Japanese machine (Aichi) the boom sections are made from aluminum, the machine had broken down while under repair they tried to move the boom sideways with the small 360 digger in the first picture, which was the costly mistake. The boom sections are made to order a complete list of boom parts and extention ram without labour was 20,000 GBP+.

Then there was the 8000 GBP for the main control PCB again built to order in Japan.

These tunnel are part of the Kings Cross/St Pancras International/London Underground Stations Interchange for passengers. The 45 deg tunnel slope is now an 200 foot escalator.

Now London's Cross Rail is another machine damage test area.

They might have got away with the Main Control PCB, they had left the cover open then it rained and the PCB went for a swim, if we could have had it repaired. But the bent boom...NO WAY.

They are a great machine when new.

The local rental lot dropped off a digger for my septic system. I asked them if there was a handbook (as I had never driven one before) Don't worry, you will learn soon enough, was the answer, as he drove off.

The chimney pots and pointing job is on the gable end where the machine will be positioned, so there would be no out reach involved.
I was doing a rewire in a factory with a sparky we had 2 pickers and a scissor lift laying in some 35mm 4 swa in and over roof frame work etc and found it very handy to use large cable ties, to hold the swa to the basket 'just to save the cable falling' it worked very well cost a lot in cable ties but saved so much pulling and lifting. My idea of using big D shackles with loose tubes on the bolts then ratchet straps from the d shackles to the roof joists to act as bearing supports and corner pulleys worked a treat though and saved a massive strain on us and the lifts.
I used the same principle years ago removing 3X300 metre lengths 150mm 4 swa from a factory we where stripping out, we needed to reuse it for our newly installed sub so it needed to come out without damage.
