New Welder

Ok friends I am in the process of selling my laptop which will give me a budget of £300 to spend.

I want a welder that will run happily on a standard domestic 13amp socket that is still man enough to tackle jobs on my landrover discovery.

If it came to chassis work I am not sure how thick the chassis is?
But primarily I need to sort out the outer and inner sills that I will be replacing standard with 120x60x3mm box section.

Let the suggestions rip lol.

£30 for a night out? Where do you go drinking? Thats only about 10 pints down here. Not really worth going out for lol.

Will the clarke 160 run all settings of a 13 amp supply ok though?

I'm not sure if I have slightly finicky mcbs or a dodgy Maypole mig which trips the mcb on max setting.

I just don't want to end up in the same situation that I am in only able to weld up to 2mm.

Have a look on fleabay

Have a look on fleabay for used machines you will be able to pick up a used ESAB or thermal arc for not much more than £300 in the sub 160 amp range if u need to use a 13a plug u should be able to run up to 150 ish amps

Ok, just go home early then!

It will run ok on a 13A supply though if you run it flat out for a long time it might blow the fuse in the plug but that's fine, just bung another fuse in and off you go.
Many people have them on here and I don't recall anyone saying they'd had problems.
If you think your electrics might be at fault then common sense would say get them looked at.

On the max setting, you will blow the fuse in a 13A plug on a long run.

For most what you need it will not be a problem. Many on this forum have a 160 for auto repair with no problems.

The only thing that will do more is an inverter MIG and nowhere near you budget.

The 13A issue has been beaten to death on this forum.

As I said, and others; it will work with an annoyance of blowing the fuse on long runs.

The only other option is to install a 16A socket. Any 150A transformer machine will be the same.

They all say that to cover themselves - Fit a normal plug & reset elec if/when it trips

So does the wlder come with a fitted plug? I thought all electrical items had to have a plug fitted by law now???

and the reason being it should be run of a 16 amp supply . they will run as stated of a 13 amp plug with fuses blowing on full current . the makers state 16 amp which is correct but no harm will come to the welder as its under fused . if they stated it could be used on 13 amp they would be flooded with complaints and a lot of time wasted with returns under waranty when nothing is wrong with the equipment supplied so there it is

I was going to wire into the cooker socket behind the cooker, run a cable through kitchen with an external 16amp socket on the wall. Then use my old 16 amp caravan extension lead and put a 16 amp socket on the new welder.

On another note was looking at the 151te manual and this said

MIGs 151TE and 160EN ONLY
Connect the mains lead, through a suitably fused isolator switch, to a 230 Volt
(50Hz) electrical supply, with a 15Amp fuse rating. A standard 13 Amp plug MUST NOT be used with these welders.

Get yourself down to machine mart on a VAT fee day, and get the 160TM for £280. Weld Equip are among the most expensive out there.

Hi,
Just thought I would add my 10 pence worth, I run a Clarke 160tm on a 13 amp plug, just used it to repair my sons series 3 off roader chassis with no problem. I expect I will blow a fuse now and again, but it's ok on the settings needed for the Landy. I blew the odd fuse on my previous 100a welder, I think they get tired over time, then will go as you strike the arc.

As a matter of interest where are you in Gloucestershire?
