Like machine tools are not dangerous enough in inexperienced hands, there is always proof that some fwit thinks it is funny to stick their finger where it does not belong.
It would serve them right to get their skull caved in, arms shattered or legs snapped.
I would not even consider trying to stop my piddly 1/2HP Myford, so if it a geared head, probably, and another 2HP, probably, they must not be in the machinist class, since respect for the the destructive power of a rotating tool MUST be appreciated, OR ELSE.

I was kind of hoping he would of broke his ankle and perhaps suffer for a few months as a reminder of not to mess with such machinery. Call me a sicko but I really wanted that to happen. This is also the reason why all the metal work shops in my highschool were never used in the time I attended school, because some stupid lad thought it was funny to poke his finger in the bar guillotine..he lost his finger.

There IS always one, ........oh and another with a camera phone,..............and a bunch who would not do it because they are scared, or better still understanding of the dangers.

Seen it before, I think he was trying to explain to his mates about torque,Stupid and he might have held it in high range, But with the back gear in NO CHANCE. He learned a very valuable lesson that day..

When I was taking metal work at school(approx 25years ago) I can remember using lathes of a similar size with 3 jaw chucks. They had guards with micro switches hidden on them and we would have never been able to do what that young lad did, that does not mean that if we could it wouldn't of happened. As pointed out, at that age being dangerous =kudos.I have to admit though whilst working on a job and getting carried away with it, I more than once started the machine with the chuck key still in place. The bang it made hitting the guard and landing in the cast chassis of the lathe used to be so loud you'd jump right out of your skin and the teacher didn't need to say a thing because of the shock and embarrassment on your face was enough!!
I have to say though, that kid does seem to be extremely stupid

Being let loose in the metalwork room during the late 70's using the forge, flypress, grinder, pillar drill, lathe and casting aluminium seemed a normal thing for a teenage boy to do. The only machine we were kept away from was the mill but by supplying my own cutters I was allowed to use it! 
We did a few stupid things like letting the gas and air run on the forge for a while before lighting it and suchlike but it seem those days are long gone with the advent of the Nanny State and "Resistive Materials", we had worse injuries in PE than Metalwork!

Yes quite right, Did some extreamily stupid things when I was a teanager, Unfortuantly for the Daily Mail, not all school leavers are ilitrate Muggers.
I'm wondering if the guy who ended up dangling from the lathe by his leg wasn't trying to remove the chuck and wasn't expecting the fool behind him to switch it on at all.
Of course if that was the case then I wouldn't give much for the life expectancy of the fool who pressed the button.

I think the title of the video says it all. To me it doesnt look like he was doing a chuck change. He was gripping the chuck key and the long pause suggests he was waiting for it to be started to begin the tug'o'war. We were all young and naive once, but I dont even think the stupid people in my age group were that stupid. People are getting dumber.
Or perhaps the tutors are less strict (red tape) and unable to drive common sense into young'ns nowadays
I dont think for a minute the tutors are less strict, its just they do not have the power to discipline youngsters like they used to.
If someone does something idiotic they can be asked to leave the lesson and a cause for concern issued, in which case their tutor will give them a talking to.
Having worked as a technician in a college it is extremely difficult to exclude an idiot permanently, few years ago we had three lads on three lathes two were larking around, they were told to desist (roared at by the lecturer) several times, it did no good. In the end as it started again one of us hit the emergency stop button & that was that, lesson over. Despite many similar occurences over several months the lecturers could not get the two little darlings barred from the workshop, (probably in case it infringed their rights)
Many of the lecturers are ex industry so know the score, in a way they are put in an impossible position.
Ultimately i think a lecturer or technician should have the power to bar anyone from a workshop on safety grounds.
