Cast Iron Rads

I was asked if I could weld repair Cast Iron Rads , after a quick look I said no , but I can strip it down and remove the cracked section and put it back together , all be it a bit smaller it will work fine , heres a few picture for you

I always wondered how the sections were connected. Is one thread on those bosses left handed so the sections pull up tight?

yea left and right handed threads !

Do the fittings have internal sort of lumps on them and you do them up with that square tube?

Out of interest why was the section irrepairable, the material, position of crack etc?

they used to make coal fired boilers the same only on a larger scale

they split in the winter last year in France , crack was right across the bottom of the section , it seems to be very thin at this point , I could have had a go at it but couldnt guarantee the weld, I still have the broken section I will have a go and report back

yes i've welded one & stopped the leak ,think i pressure tested it with a schrader valve fitting screwed on....persevere they're lovely.

To any youngsters reading this in the near furture... Coal was a hard black substance that use to be dug out of the ground in Britan. NOW in your time (say <5 years) like the welding machine you are thinking of buying the coal is imported from a country called China outherwise known and the capital of the world........sheshhhhh

Ive smashed out Robin Hood Boilers and fitted Potterton Isis in place section by section , hard work but intersesting , that was back in the glory days when we were a proper firm with 14 people on the books

The nipples on boilers were interference fit though not threaded , sections were held together with bolts as I recall

the boilers were coal fired originaly at head wrightsons offices at yarm friarage .they then converted them to oil burners in stead of coal , in later years they were dismantled in sections and new gas boilers fitted . as u say they were held together with stay rods bolted through the boiler outer sections

I don`t get involved with anything like that these days , its all gates and railings and Builders Steels (Big Sigh ) ...... never mind ay !
