Daughter has a 3yr old Honda Accord with a DPF problem. She took it in to our local garage who emptied 3 different types of deisel engine treatment into the fuel tank and took it for a drive without success. They said it would need a new filter £800 plus fitting. She has since had a word with Honda who will have a look at it, and say it may need a new filter. Thrashing it in low gear for quite a long way didn't help, anyone any ideas to save her silly money??.

When the wife's car played up (fiat) the garage plugged in there engine management tool and told the car to do a forced regeneration has been fine ever since. If you have to go down the replacement path just remove the thing
I don't think it is as simple as that, as I understand it, removing the filter will drastically effect the engine and performance.

It will go up a there is less restriction in the outlet. The ecu will need telling there is do dpf there will a specialist for your vehicle

There is a fluid you can clean the DPF out with if you fancy removin it for a day. I haven't used it myself but a good friend of mine swears by it. Think he said it was made by autotec

I'm sure this is the stuff. I think you get a couple of
Litres of the fluid and soak the DPF overnight. Put it back and then run some of the fuel additive through it.
As I said I haven't used it, but I had a neighbour having trouble with a DPF recently and my mate told me I get this, he said its good stuff.

I work in a garage and have seen a Vectra and a C class mercedes have this same problem. Clogged up DPF from doing countless amounts of short stop and start driving, and due to the cost of fuel rising, everybody drives a lot slower and change up gear earlier, and it never gives the engine a chance to rev up and blow out the accumulated soot.
Normally a DPF will regenerate its self on journies where the speed is above 40mph and for around 30 minutes, as it takes heat to regenerate the filter. Diesels have a naturally lower exhaust gas temperature, so this additional heat will need to be made by driving the vehicle at higher engine RPM's.
In other words, EVERYONE with a diesel will need to rag your diesels at least once per month!
Other wise, driving slow will might save you a little on diesel costs, but compare that to the cost of a DPF + labor + vat....

Take it for a good long drive up and down the nearest motorway. It needs to get HOT. At least 50 mph for at least 25 minutes. If that doesn't clear it then you'll be looking at replacement. Citroens and Peugeots use PAT or Eolys? fluid (based on sheep wee believe it or not) to artificially increase the temperature of the combustion to burn off the soot in the filter. Not sure about Honda though. I've heard stories of guys in London taking the filter off and running a pressure washer through it but not sure I'd suggest that lol.

Honda CDTi DPF's are passive, meaning it uses heat from the engine to regenerate, when the time is right it will go into regeneration mode, injecting a few shots of fuel after the Top Dead centre of the power stroke has been acheived, thus making the discharged exhaust gases super hot to get the regeneration process underway.
Bluemotion/bluetec by Volkswagon and Mercedes use a Urea (ammonia) solution sprayed in to the exhaust stream before the catalytic converter to break down hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen, and carbon monoxide into elements such as CO2, nitrogen gas, H2O and the catalytic converter mops up any unreacted pollution, whilst any organic soot is reduced and trapped via the DPF
The urea solution doesn't increase the temperature of the exhaust gases, Puegeot use a similar system that adds this solution into the fuel, whilst the german inject directly into exhaust gas.
Others such as ford and vauxhall just use a plain jane passive system with no additive. The top up point on these systems are found behind some cowling in the rear near side wheel arch in peugeot cars

Good link there not far from me and can do the wife's car will get in touch with them and see how much to get rid!
It really p****s me off when manufactures do wonderful things to cars to make them 'cleaner' or run smoother and they happpen to be really fragile systems liable to go wrong AND cost a small fortune to fix!
I know the DPF's get clogged by town driving but to me it sounds like 'we couldnt be arsed to design a car capable of being driven round town and when it packs up it the owner will pickup the bill'
If its not the DPF's its the badly designed dual mass flywheel lottery (£1000 bill) or injecters at £100 to £200 each or something else.

I fully agree with you there, like everyone else I am on a fairly tight budget, and the impending flashing light of doom is a constant worry with the repairs to injectors and fuel pumps etc costing more than the value of my car!

Will be interested to know how you get on...my first diesel car arrives this week and this was a future modificiation I was considering...think I read somewhere its around the £200 to £250 mark.
Well I'm delighted to say NONE of my diesel vehicles has a DPF 
I have a 2001 Disco, 1990 Landrover 110, 1990 JCB 3CX, ancient twin Petter dumper, Fordson Power Major tractor, Ford 4000 tractor, 140CFM Road Compressor - all pre-date this modern tomfoolery thank goodness.

At this point it seems I may have to remove the filter unit and try to clean it it out. What would be the best way?, chemicals or heat, I have access to a roofers propane torch, this gives a lot of heat from a 70mm flame. Just don't want to damage it and make things worse, just trying to save the lass money she can't afford at the moment, Xmas, kids etc.
