i've got a clarke 14" chop saw, brought it with the intention i will be getting straight cuts everytime, rather than using a grinder or hacksaw. but it doesnt its not that good, what can i check to see if its set up right?
thanks joe
i will try to find something similar, i can set the angles fine, but i think my discs may flex as the cut has a like a double angle if you know where i am coming from?
First thing to do is place a machinists square on the table to confirm the blade is perpendicular to it. Then bring the blade down (obviously switched off) to see if it remains perpendicular. If it's out i'd back it, alternative is to shim it where the pivot mounts. If the pivot is sloppy then it needs backing. If it checks out then mark something before you cut it to make it easier to see where it's out... as said user technique can result in wonky cuts due to the blade flexing, usually more noticable when making angled cuts on round tube compared to 90* cuts on square
i dont beleive i should have to do this as it should cut straight standard, but im willing to give it a try, so i will post when i have done these step
joe
Not too sure about the Evolution saws, I know they make two ranges no doubt one is better than the other.
I have the Dewalt TCT chop saw, nice piece of kit.
thanks for all the help i appreciate it! i think i am going to try all i can to get a straight cut, if i do not succeed i will speak to the shop and go from there
thanks joe
iv'e got an old Makita chop saw, it cuts just enough off vertical to make it useless, i tried shimming the pivot, but it didn't work, my guess was the motor bearing might be worn. I need to have another look at it sometime.
I got it out of a skip and it just needed new brushes, so i can't complain !
Also i totally recommend Rage saws, just never force the blade, let it eat at its own pace, or you will knacker the carbide tips.
Take it back, ask them to set it up and you will return for a demonstration cut and if it fails you will require your money back.
I have a cross mitre saw from new,it had to be set verticaly, horizontaly before it would cut straight, once done it was fine except the blade flexed a bit, large washer on the outer of the blade sorted it.
I picked up a small Rage Evolution mitre saw from B&Q for just under £50. Good bit of kit for the money. Seems to cut 2-3mm box section OK. Not too keen on the hot metal swarf it fires about, but it's so much more compact than the bigger abrasive saws. I did need to fettle with the fence and the vertical adjustment to get a true cut, but it didn't take long.
