Unused gas cylinder recommissioning...

Found an oldish BOC gas cylinder in a corner of the garage at work, its been there for as long as i've worked there (2 years) and its not being used. Looking closely at the dirty label, its an oxygen cylinder. Unknown if its got anything left in it..

Would BOC decline if i were to request to have it test, re labled and filled with argo shield light or CO2?

Would save me on renting a cylinder as i could tell them i've inherited it..

I think I can state with a fair bit of confidence the answer would be a polite no if you are lucky.. or a very inpolite no if unlucky.

Well, I asked the fella who does the accounts and finances there and he said setting up with them will be initially expensive but the refills aren't too bad.

Problem is, i'm stuck on the fence between no needing a huge amount of gas, not wanting to waste money on the tiny disposables, and keeping costs down, as i need to buy a regulator.

I'm playing around with my mig, keeping up my practice and for when i'm bored..

How many hair brained Scams are people going to ask and try before the realization of boc bottles belong to boc and they will only deal with rental customers

The place I work at, we borrow and lend items freely, as long as you ask, theres no problem. I don't go taking things from behind there backs... non of us do.

But in practical terms dont oxygen cylinders have different valves to CO2 or mixed gases? I know medical cylinders do

Ah right, gotchya! The cylinder must be on the garages account, its a shame they don't do multi cylinder account deals for business, as I'd be able to just rent an extra cylinder off the garage account. (They'd let me do that).

Not too sure, this cylinder I presume was for our oxyacetylene torches at one time.

It's easy enough to set up a account yourself. Get the name of the rep the garage deals with, call them explain what you need and they will sort you

We don't have a rep, we are literally a mile from a local BOC premises. I'll phone up and enquire.

OK.. to clarify for you without taking the micky out of your plan:

BOC bottles are owned by BOC and rented to an account holder, the bottle you mention must have been rented at some time, probably by the garage you work for.

They are not allowed to transfer ownership or rental to you.

BOC would never change the label on a oxy bottle and fill it with a different gas.

So basically any ideas you have with that bottle won't work and some of them may be illegal to do.

Get yourself around the industrail estates many places now do good deals..I found Inngas who are a calor gas agent but also do welding gases.. a full size argon/co2 for £30 rent and £30 refill.

Aww, thats not fair at my welding tuition academy I must of counted 50+ cylinders of all kinds of shielding gas... 1 rental charge for each one of those... = ouch!

Tell BOC you've found an old bottle and ask them what you should do with it, they will either ask you to return it or they will arrange for it to be collected. If you are acting in good faith they won't worry about prosecuting you.

As for filling it with CO2 - NEVER fill a bottle with gas it isn't intended for.

Got bottles at work that are spares awaiting service and have been for 10 years with rental of £300 a year! (Special gases)

Will do that. Wouldn't want to get into trouble over an old gas cylinder.

In years gone buy BOC reps used to call in count bottles to see if you had more than you were renting, have seen them remove bottles in trailer.
Went to the toilet in a factory once to find I could not get into the cubical, waited around no sound asked any one in there/ as the boys were all ways up to tricks & thought someone might have locked door & climbed over.
Went & asked foreman is every one here? loos locked! AHH he said that's the bottle store if the BOC man calls we just say the rental bottles over there against wall & let him have a wander around.
BOC have always been difficult to deal with & expensive, would love to have been able to charge for ordering my products on top of cost.
