Is there a quick way of cutting threaded bar?

I have 4568 lengths to cut at 160mm.

I would have thought that for that kind of amount there must be a commercial supplier.
Otherwise a bunch of unemployed teenagers and a lot of hacksaws and files.

Hi Paul, How do the ends need to be?? I had to make a load of support brackets using 8mm threaded bar and i used a Kingsland metal worker Just Put the Bar in the round hole for the bars and it would snap off clean as the bar is pretty strong. I even tried a nut and it screwed on ok.

Another way which i cut over 1500 bars i think about 300mm was to make a holder out of 100mm box section about 100 wide On one face drill 2 holes in the middle weld a nut to the outside of the holes and then with a small bit of flat push it inside the box, so what happens is you tighten the bolts, it pushes the flat and holds the lenghts of bars solid, Do this again on the next face, so what your doing is pushing the bundle of bars to one side of the inside of the box and box and then do the same with the top, Pushing down, you should have a nice square bundle of bars formed into a cube, Then Push into a Bandsaw, with a Jig on the front for the lenght.

The idea is to cut as many as you can in one go, if Clamped solid, then a bandsaw is the way to go, Don't try cutting a bundle of bars in a chopsaw you'll knacker the blade.

Ends need to be clean enough to run a nut on, one end anyway. I'd love the idea of shearing them, even if it means a bit more cleaning up on one end.
Theres a propper threaded bar cutter that would do the job but the jaws only go up to M10 unfortunately.

Do you not know anyone with an auto bandsaw? Just load up and it will cut happily all day and move the bar to the next cut, Just have a big bin ready to catch all the bars.

Failing that try the hire shops they might have one of those rod cutters like in the post above.

What type of shear have you tried? Try a block of metal with an appropriate size hole in it for pushing the bar through and then a shear going down flush with the face of the block where the bar protrudes. A snug hole in the block should stop the bar and thread deforming, if your blade is keen.

I presume you have looked at this but what is the reason for it being a threaded bar?

Our shear is a 110 tonne Geka. Not the best tool for small stuff like this.

It needs to be threaded or the nut won't move They are a bit of M12 bar with a plate welded on one end. Part of a structural steel job that act as ties to the building and need to be adjustable.

I've spent the best part of an hour trying to find the type of cutter you posted Gerry; and failed. Thanks for that; think that will do us for now..see how they get on, powered one looks nice but would only live in a box after the job is done. Should be quick enough set up with a stop..tack the cutter to the bench with a bit of plate for a stop.

Could you weld a bolt to the plate?

The way it has to be set up, the head would need to be cut off, so same amount, if not more, work.

Not so much a cutter but a metalworker similar to this

Its very good because the blades just slice leaving no distortion or burr, The bars are generally pretty hard so they just tent to snap clean.

The bar simply goes in the small round hole to the right in the yellow square

Just thought if you had one at your work place you could try that
