newbie needs help! Converting 3phase drill to single

Hi guys, Ive recently bought a 2nd hand great size of a 3phase pillar drill

its everything i need except its 3 phase!

Im getting and have researched conflicting reports, on how to get this working,

i came across you guys, and hell what have i missed out on, i will be divorced in no time from lack of attention to the wife! THere is soooooooooooo much info on here i love it!

as i say 3 ph drill, with 3ph starter, and emergency stop button (maybe not important but threw it in there) ex school as you can imagine

19mm shaft, 1hp.

one company has told me all i will need is to whack a single phase motor of equivalent size/shaft etc in and hey presto

another company says they will have to rewire the motor to add extra wires, and run an inverter, and this will cost £240.

any advice?

Machine Mart do a nice selection of single phase motors right upto 4 HP.

You may be able to resell your old 3 phase motor on ebay and recoup some of the costs, This would be the best otpion, or as been said a decent second hand one from ebay will do just as well

IF you just have this one tool then it's probably cheaper to just get a new motor.

If you think you might end up acquiring more 3 phase kit in the future then it might be worth getting a converter but they are expensive.

Axminster tools do a range of 230V motors including some with 19mm shafts, although as most pillar drills are belt and pulley drive a different shaft size probably isn't a big issue.

On think to watch out for is to get the right speed motor, you probably want a 4 pole one for a drill

I bought a replacement motor (3/4 hp single phase) for my bandsaw from these people around 2 years ago http://stores.ebay.co.uk/ELECTRIC-MOTOR-TRADING ...has had a fair bit of use with no problems, and was a pretty good price as I remember.

Double check the shaft diameter - if it's an old drill it may be 3/4 inch (19.05mm) rather than 19mm. The key size may be different.

If you look at the motor data plate and see if it is duel voltage motor 380-420V and 200-220v is a typical voltage bands. If that's the case then you can run through an inverter that will give you infinite speed control and dc brake and em stop facility etc.

if your changing a 3 phase to a single phase make sure u have the room to fit it as a single phase motor body is larger than a 3 phase . thats apart from the shaft size

Mine were the same near as dammit, the mounts were different though and I had to get a longer belt.

Fitting an inverter will be a lot less faff than swapping the motor.

what about the starter? can i run a single phase motor with the same starter?

seen a few single phase motors on ebay same diameter shaft and speed, thats what i thought just swap it over, but ive been told you cant do it.

Ill check on the diameter too, never thought it could be 3/4 ! cheers

is it an on / off type of switch like modern 240 pillar drills have , or a proper old NO VOLT RELEASE starter, if its a NVR--then No,coils will be 415 volt, you`ll want 240.

I`m no leccy but I hope im right. Good old days you could get new coils, but today??? doubt it.

Just had a look at a few new drills and they all have NVR fitted.

modern day on /off have a red and a green butten on a wee panel about a couple of inches x about 11/4, green pushes in red off,
a No volt relay will "clonk" in when you hit the start the coil energises with the voltage and pulls the contacts together, when voltage is cut, either with the stop butten, emergency stop butten or a power failure, the relay or relays drop out and cuts the power, the buttens have a definite clonk, unfortunately you cant test it, but given its a 3 phase machine i`m guessing its a bit older and industrial and its very likely to have a NVR incorporated into it, changing is no big problem just more expense, and it will be safer than an on/off switch, and the overload trip-when set, will give some overload protection to the motor.

I bought a 13 speed import from Grahaem Eng many years ago, bog standard rebaged machine still available,only had the green push in start and red to stop no NVR at all, -- it has now.( but the starting windings went so replaced motor and stuck a NVR on as well.
Lot of the stuff I see only has start /stop buttens, Machine mart/clarke all look on/off jobs. simple cheap push in to make contact push red to release, no motor protection and if theres a power cut during drilling it starts up on its own when power is restored.- unless you have hit the red.

crafty stuck a pic up when I was replying,
the start stop has a NVR incorporated, I doubt very much if the coil will work on 240, you may not get a switch to fit the hole but a surface mounted one wont break ya heart, just ya pocket. Tidy machine.
