celly or waterbased

Have been going through reading with interest about 2k paint. The place I am working from at the min is not suitable for me spraying 2k for various different reasons, which I dont really need to get into here.

My question is is celly as dangerous as 2k? I have other people in units around me so I am thinking of their health as well as mine and for what painting I do a full booth isnt required. I dont mind if I have to paint late at night when the other business have shut I just dont want people getting ill.

My other thought was waterbased. Obviously drying times are increased as I have read but what other disadvantages are there. Drying time isnt really a problem tbh.

Can celly and waterbased be purchased in mettalics as well. Do I use a 1k primer and do both need laquer?

Also which one is best for going over other paints ie 2k. Or is it best to barcoat everything?

waterbased is just the basecoats ...you still need to use 2k clear over it

anything metalic will need clear coat , plain /straight colours like white ,red ,black will also be avail in direct gloss

depends what you are painting really , 1k /celly clear is pretty awefull

Ah I thought a waterbased would have not needed a clear/have its own clear.

So waterbased/celly plain colours dont need clear but pearls/metallics do?

What is so bad about the 1k/celly clear (are they different?)

I take it neither of these have isocyanites (i think thats spelt right) But would they be ok with a dedicated mask (not airfed)

water based is base coat only....no they dont have waterbased clear

you can get celly plain non metalic that doesnt need clear

1k clears are thin , tend to yellow and crack with age

and yes celly and 1k stuff wont have iso's , but a good mask and ventilation is still required , still nasty stinky stuff

celly can also be bought in solid colour top coat (shiny) so will not need clearcoat.
Anything celly based as a final coat, be it clear coat or coloured top coat is very unstable so pro painters will never touch it as it can have so many problems with it and can be time consuming to correct. 2k, spray it on properly and its a done deal.
Only the 2k shiny stuff contains iso's.

So what kind of primer would be best with both? or do they have dedicated primer.
I can get 1k filler/primer easy enough and that would be great considering the conditions I am working under.

well sinse you cant use 2k primer it will have to be 1k stuff

or some folk roller 2k on over filler repairs as it wont be too risky via the rolller

what are you painting ..maybe we can suggest some products

As a by the way. Barcoat is best left in the cupboard and in my opinion only used as a very last resort. Works ok as a sealer but its concealing major paint issues rather than addressing and curing.

I will be body repairs up to full vehicles. I found out there is a guy on the same ind estate as me who has a spray booth. I have contacted him to see if there is any way he would rent it out as he doesn't seem to use it much, but other than that im afraid its basically spraying in a workshop. The fumes will be able to get from unit to unit which is why I cant use 2k. I looked at rollering but I don't think you can get as good a finish as with spraying. Also I dont think it looks too professional when you say "yes sir I can paint your vehicle, I will use a roller to do it.)

If your worried about the downside of 2K products you could always roller it on as Steve suggested, You would be surprised at the finish you can achieve this way.
Quite often i will roller primer on rather than spraying, then flat the primer off as it needs to be flatted anyway.

This is a door i did recently, not a bad finish at all. You could even roller topcoat straight paint and flat & polish after, just a bit more work involved. 2K is very forgiving, Never liked celly myself.

I thought it was the hardener which contained the iso's. Isnt that why its called 2 pack, paint + hardener? So is celly classed as a 1k paint????

Its the hardener Jim although it don't make any difference as you can't use one without the other.
