MIG footpedal??????

my mate came over today with a bracket he had broken, and asked if he could use my welder to tack it back together as he has sold his.

as i was going to be there with him i said yeah go for it, plugged the welder in and got it set up, and then he asked where my foot pedal was? i explained it was a mig and not a tig, and he said that he would still prefer a foot pedal, as thats what he had on his migmate?

didnt think a foot pedal would help with mig, let alone be possible

am i right in thinking he is full of c**p, or do people use pedals with mig?

you could rig a foot pedal to a mig as long as the gas was controled via a solenoid

would it be an advantage to have it though? he seemed very sure about it and wasnt too happy about using fixed settings, and after he tacked it, i ended up running the seem cos he reckoned he couldnt get a good enough weld without a pedal, whereas i ran a nice seam between the tackes first time with plenty of penetration.

i not calling him a liar or anything, just wondering if its worth having a go at setting a pedal up for my gasless instead of just having a max an min toggle switch

if he couldnt run a nice bead then he was at fault, a bad workman always blames his tools especially when someone else ends up doing it right
the foot switch would only do what your trigger does

i thought that. he reckons he is a coded arc welder, but from what he was saying about the stuff he has done and they welders he has had and sold, i dont think he's being honest. apparently tried tig but didnt like it cos it was too easy???

anyway, if theres no point trying it, i;ll stick to my torch and trigger till i get my tig in a few years cheers mate

Could you get fine control over the arc if a foot pedal was used to trim the wire speed?

like i said, he managed 2 tacks about 20mm apart, and then i had to run the seam and finish the welds and blend them in on the edges. and im no expert, far from it, ive only been welding since xmas, but if hes coded in MMA he should have a firm grasp of gasless mig, i find it much easier than arc welding

yeah i tried tigging some slainless hinges to a bit of stainless box in work, and just ended up with a melted hinge and a blob for a weld. i cant wait till i can afford a dc inverter tig set so i can learn how to do it.

I've never known a mig welder to have a foot pedal, especially not a SIP Migmate! If it was possible then I'm sure it would have been done by now.
I think your mate is most definitely full of c**p.

Well I'm a bit of a diy brain surgeon in my spare time, it's not rocket science and if you had a mig foot pedal what would it control, wire speed or amps ? Mind you on a migmate they are linked anyway sort of

Wire speed IS amps, the power switches control the voltage.
Some machine manuals tell you in no uncertain terms not to adjust the voltage during welding which is what the pedal would be doing.
If you could vary the power output you'd also have to maintain control over the wire speed which makes fine-tuning very difficult...which is probably why it's not been done.
If it worked do you honestly think the big welding companies wouldn't have tried it by now?

now i know the difference between volts and amps, electrically speaking

but what do volts and amps do with regards to welding, cos i always leave my mightymig 100 on max, and wire speed on 6, and it'll do everything from about 1.5 to around 4mm without needing adjusting, and anything above or below those valuses, theres no point trying

i was under the impression, as on the box it says, min is 45 amps, and max is 96 amps, or something like that

ive always wondered why the sets in work have a voltage, knob, and a current knob
