Found a table in the news today...

*Monthly petrol costs are based on an individual owning a car that does 37.8 MPG, driving 12,000 miles a year.

At least we aren't the dearest, yet. You'd have to be a petrolhead in Eritrea to spend 2/3 of your income on fuel!

From what i've read, the price of fuel in Norway also includes road tax.

I have travelled and worked all over the world, we are laughed at world wide, and get robbed blind by our own government, we are ruled by bloody Brussels who judging by the Quatada fiasco even tell us when we can take a ****, and not to mention that clown in downing street who thinks that taxing hot food (above ambient temp) is the right thing to do, we are bled dry by his bloody GREEN tax, it makes me ashamed to be British, and to think I was so nearly Irish, makes me bloody sick...rant over...

Agreed. At risk of being chastised for provoking a political debate I would just like to make one point. I detest our system of governement and those presiding within it, problem is, we keep voting one or the other in and allowing them to continue. What is the alternative though ? If no one voted, in protest, then they could not take power but we would still need an alternative. One idea I had, to get around this 4 year cyclical voting chaos, is to have a 25 or even 50 year constitution, independant of party political agenda, that would protect the interest of citizens in respect of health services, transport, taxation, national interests such as immigration and the operation of commercial enterprise. The latter to prevent the likes of banks operating like gangsters.
It would place limits on variables associated with these factors so that we could not be plundered at the whim of government when they muck things up.
Only thing is, even if it is workable it would probably take 50 years to formulate it !!

That comparison means nothing without knowing the income for each country. For example Norway has a very high average Income.

Hi, All of us, including myself complain about this, but when I started buying petrol(for a motor bike) in 1946 petrol wa just 2 SHILLINGS a GALLON. Wages for average worker of my age then was around £3 a week, therefire you got thirty gallons for a weeks wage. The ratio staid the same for most of my life, and unless you are now on minimum wage its the same approx. £210 quid will still buy 30 gallons roughly......... Think of everything thats now cheaper. A telly cost a months wages !!! Now less than a weeks.....

That my be true, however in 1946 you probably worked less than a few miles from your place of work, most walked or cycled.

Additionally, public transport was effective, far more convenient and alot cheaper than now, so people had a viable alternative !
I live in the country, so am some distance away from even the essential things, like supermarkets etc. Buses do run but very infrequently and unreliably and very expensive.
I would dearly like to use a bicycle for at least some journies but my life would be at serious risk on some of the roads I would have to use in order to shop etc.
Even the doctor and dentist are 7 miles away, in different directions, and trying to use the bus to visit them would be virtually impossible.
No, we are being wallet raped, simple as !!

Agreed, but I still see all sorts of people accelerating and braking hard and there's still plenty of traffic on the road, so while people moan about the price of fuel they don't seem to care how much they use.
Personally I felt things were going to get like this about 4 years ago and changed my job to reduce travelling, similar money but £30 a week less in fuel and about an hour more at home each day which is even more valuable.

times money if i do callouts 40 miles away i hoof it there and hoof it back it might cost an extra fiver in fuel but i can book extra time in and get 20 quid extra be home earlier and 15 quid up so theres no incentive to save fuel and i get full tax allowance on it

Yes, I fully understand and its your call at the end of the day and I'm sure your not going to moan about it as we are subsidising your fuel

Perhaps what I meant was that there are clearly ordinary people who thrash about and the moan about the price of fuel. A very level headed colleague at work loves to tell us how quickly he got to work in his Renault Senic and how many cars have held him up and that he has had to pass, then in the next breath is moaning about the fuel he uses and the cost of tyres.

No public transport was properly worse, My Grandfather commuted throughout the war years and into the 50s from where we live now in the country to do his shifts at the flour Mill some 8 odd miles , Petrol was rationed or too expensive so he would walk or cycle.
Additionally because times were hard they would pick up bricks from derelict property's and sell them at the Market at the same distance, the only means of transport was horse and cart.
They lived mostly on what they grew, reared or shot, and raised a family that way, It was romantic it was simply the only way they could survive, and they did without a car...

Proportionately though, for any given persons driving habits, they are still paying more for the fuel they use ! It's like the increase in domestic energy costs, yes we can turn down the thermostat and wear more clothes but it's not that same as being comfortably warm, especially first thing in the morning !

for private use i ease off as theres no great rush and i do object to wasting fuel . whats not fair is buisness people claim vat and fuel back me included and private people going to there job and spending 50 quid or more on fuel cant claim it back as an expense the bigger the firm the bigger the perks

Fuel costs just as much here as in the rest of Europe, the only difference being the average monthly wage is 750 euros (although for most of the people it's closer to 500.) Try living on a wage like this and filling up your tank twice a month. Oh, and that's not mentioning the price of everything else going up weekly because of the cost of transport.

The EU has made a nice effing mess of this one.

Isnt Diesel a by product of Petrol ?? So why does it cost more ?? Oh thats right Green Tax . All done under the guise of "Global Warming". Didnt that Al Gore video get pulled apart in the Commons/Houses of Parliament (iirc). Hes not even a Scientist/Climatologist is he ? Please correct me if im wrong.
