up hand welding stick

hya guys does any one have any advice for up hand welding on about 4-6 mm thick mild steel ?

also i know every thing is supposed to butt up nice but sometimes thats not always gunna happen any ideals on gaps and how to approch them or what rods to use ???

2.5mm rod, around 65-75 amps, rod at about 75 degrees (from below) to the work piece. Burn into the edge then move across to fuse the two pieces together creating a small weave.

When you get to a gap shorten the arc length by pushing the rod closer to the work piece, let it build up and whip across to fill the gap.

(shortening the arc length decreases the arc voltage making the pool slightly cooler)

Try some 6013s or 7018s

Yes, cheap buzz boxes are more CV (constant Voltage) than CC (constant current). As you reduce the gap, the current increases. Also, due to the low OCV, as you increase the gap length the arc duty cycle decreases.

Usually the lower the OCV, the less they are CC. Even good transformer machines have a current slope with arc length.


Inverters are really the only true CC machines as they use feedback to always maintain the same current.

Lincoln Electric used to have good pages about the issue, but they have pulled lots of the useful stuff from their site.

hya guys :-D thanks for the help i had a go today i will get some photos up later i feel this is harder then mig and tig. i wish i had a mig welder and argon gas at home ill put a photo up later of my kinda success some were total faliers some were ok some were no where near neat or perfect but thats life i guess :-D

1. wear a hat sparks will go down ur back
2. make sure glove is outside leather welding jacket so sparks dont roll down ur arm and singe ur arm pit hair.

this is a very good lesson ive expereince this and it hurts

i think im a converted stick welder i just got to get good at it

well guys got round to trying all Positions. failed

heres on new ish steel

theres a tube i tig welded on the back so i could go down vertical

i really want to push this skill and not form pigeion poo all the time

I think you need to perfect your photography before you try the welding DJP

Hard to tell what's going on in any of those pics. Would be good if you supplied info though - rod size and type and amps used, as that's almost better than pictures.

Hard to see in the pictures.

I'd say up the current and short arc length. I find anything less than 3.2mm you need to drag the rod or you will get slag inclusions..

info i can take a guess.
120 amps
some old electrodes dad came home with 2.2 ? no writing on the box
some other electrodes that were about 1.2 (guess) did come in a box i used them before but have been currently transfered to another box for some unknow reason. pictures are bad i have to agree but what about the newish steel the run did not seem to bad for a first go.

well i got a few more things to practice on so will be good hopefully i will improve i would do mig but i find a pain when you have to bring a gas bottle and the welding unit to the work peice.
and apparently its the harder one of the welding process.


also i will try to work on my photographs as well so guys can strip my welds to peices and tell me my falults

If you are trying to weld vertical down make sure you have rods suitable for this position, not all rods will do this.

You couls do with getting some thicker plate to practise on. Vertical up welding generates a lot of heat, on thin material you will just end up with a series of snotty lumps until you get the hang of it

Thats the plan mate i got a skip to practice on dad dose not want to use gunna get scaped plus i asked for some scap tube and plate just see what he brings home plus i might try some 7018 rods if thats the ones or a box with writing on or at least i know what is in the box

Hya guys got some practice last night another skip to stich up this bin was rusty and still is but with some bird poo on it
next pay day im buying a grinder a wire brush is no good :-)

it looked better before i started to weld to be fair :-D 2.5 mm rods 120 6013 rods and being me no grinding :-D

I'd up the current a bit more an keep real short arc. I usually drag the rod.

Get a grinder. The welds will be better if you grind a V in the joint. Then the welds won't be just sitting on top. Also, you can clean the metal down to bare metal.

You could leave more of a gap and welds both sides.
