Gearbox Hoist

Hello all
just wondered had anyone any experience with a gearbox hoist. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sealey-30..._Lifting_Moving_Equipment&hash=item56350ea45f

Are they any good? I struggle to get gearboxes in on my own and its not doing the back any favours

Not used one of them, if doing it on the floor I use a car jack to help support the box, if doing it on a ramp I get someone else to help!

that only holds the engine in place, at least if your doing it on floor you can use a trolley jack to take weight of gearbox

I'm summising that only lifts the backend of the gear box up? ie it fits internally in the car and thachain goes around the gearbox and up through the gear stick hole?

If that is the case I used to do the same thing but with a 4b3 joist,the ends of the joist were propped up with axel stands and the backend of gearbox was lifted with strong rope....eck no need to splash out £62 if you can improvise.

Usual Way For Me With No Help From Others.

Car Up On Stands Loosen Stuff Then Position Trolley Jack Beneath Box Final Undo Then Slowly Lower Engine And Box On The Jack To Create Clearance.

Support Engine With Another Jack And Release Box From Engine Pull Box Clear BUT DO NOT Adjust This Trolley Jack !

Do Whats Required With The Box Place Back On The Jack At Same Position And Push Back Onto Engine !

Has Worked A Treat About Four Times Now - An Old Back Street Mechanic Taught Me That One (Cheers Norm)

Its A Support Only Not For Lifting - Believe The Feet Stand On Either Side Of Engine Bay in The Drainage Channels.

as above you still have to lift the box more or less in position then attatch it to the support wich then gives you fine adjustment so you can line it up.
you would be better off getting a high lift trolly jack and making a cradle to sit gear boxes in and also make one of those support beams to go with it

Its A Support Only Not For Lifting

So whats the big fly wing bolt for?...it does lift the gearbox up but at the back end for helping manouvring the front of the gearbox housing onto the engine.

uve def been lucky Mick, ive got the odd one on the box but getting the alignment right can be a problem even after using a clutch alignment tool. Im doing a berlingo van just now and its a nightmare.

for the transverse engines and gearboxes an engine hoist would be perfect.
but take the new RWD transits it would have to be a transmission jack as there is no hole in the floor to pass ropes through

I used to work in a garage and used these all the time to support engines when removing gearboxs.We used to call it the godsend as the sevice manager always said it was a godsend after we had it(bit of a struggle before).Very handy pice of kit.

I've used a home made version of the same thing borrowed off a mechanic friend and they are invaluable for front wheel drive cars where the gearbox mount supports the engine as well. Hang the engine on and release the gearbox from it then lower the engine to angle it down by turning the wing nut and take the box out on a trolley jack if needed but most of the front wheel drive boxes I've done can be reasonably easily handled. They are not for rear wheel drive cars if that's what you want one for.
