Could you weld your car to this high standard

Was just been having a look around the net for a used welding torch and came across this.
How does work like this ever pass a MOT, sorry if this is a member of this forum but people should not have to pay for that sort of work and if they are the best pics for an advert give up now.

He's overlapped the patches without cutting out all the rust and while not the neatest of welding, as long as it is continuous welding (hard to tell from photo) this should pass the MOT and last a couple of years before rusting out again, which may be all that the customer wants/ is willing to pay for.

In my work I cut out all the rust and treat the inside of cavities with zinc spray (and wax after the work is done) and butt weld and grind down / seam seal and paint the repairs. On this forum we have been spoilt by lots of lovely pics of loving restoration style work. In the real world this is what you are likely to get from a mobile welder.

Elastoplast welding, if it's just to get another year out of it it's fine. I did it with a Transit pick up I bought cheap when doing the house up and it lasted me two years then went to live on a farm and was there many years still holding together.

Iv had worse welding jobs done in the past when i didn't know any better from mobile welders, they rush the job cause time is money, nothing like doing it your self i say.

I have to say you guys are very forgiving.
To me it looks like 80% of the weld is on the new plate with very little amps and the plate on the chassis dont even cover the rust hole completey.
But I suppose thats why I never made any money when I had a garage.

That's the normal standard of MOT welding done by most garages and auto welders.

People in general don't want to pay for better standard welding, they just want it to pass an MOT.

you got in one money as long as it passes a test and it's cheap
that's all they want until next year
then they moan well i had it welded last year

Nothing wrong here.and as stated if it got it through the MOT for 12 months then thats what it did and was expected.
I don't think the owners were to bothered.

They don't have to pay for that level of work, they just insist on it. Sorry, but that's what' £30 of welding that they have done there. At that price your not going to get pristine, not if the garage wants to pay the overheads and make a wage.

Yea the works shoddy, but that's all the customer wants.... give the guys a break unless you know they were charging top prices for low end work

Seen worse in the trade, especially before continuous seams became mandatory.
'Cover patches' they were called, because they covered up the crap underneath. You weren't expected to clean out the 2 kilos of loose rusty metal inside either. That took time, and you'd get a bad mark for that.
As already said, time was everything, and probably still is. You'd get:
"Haven't you finished that bustard yet? I want the Rover and the Mini done before 4.30, y'know. You're not angling for overtime, are yer?"

A mate of mine who works in a bodyshop repairers says that most of the welding authorities who do their testing are more bothered about adhering to health and safety regulations than the actual standard of welding they are achieving.

Having seen some of the stuff from those shops I'd say he was right Prem, and having seen the invoices I did think 'stealing a living' at the time..

I've seen stuff like this so many times as already said time is money so do as little work as possible and get paid.

A lad at work asked me to weld a 'patch' on his golf, he said he would pay me (nice of him!) and just to give him an idea how much.

Went round and had a look and it was rotten as a peach, someone had been there before (with a stick welder by the look of it ), I told him the panel would need to be cut out and fresh metal butt welded in it was a good days work so gave him a price accordingly.

It was done by a 'mobile' welder in the end, charged him £20 less and just bodged a panel over the top , He'll be there again next year
