Choice of Consumer Unit?

Hi,
Is there much to choose between different makes of consumer unit (& RCDs, MCBs, etc.) - I'm leaning towards MK or Crabtree? I've got Legrand in my shed which is OK, I guess.

mk wylex square d . hager crabtree there all much the same. u can get one made by chint there chinese [dont criticise ]there good quality easy to fit and the price is right i had a faulty one and kicked of over it the firm supplyed me with 4 free units full of breakers free and apologised crabtree wylex and mem all had faulty breakers and had to be returned last year . all made in china

I wouldn't have anything Chinese in my electrical system !! Just find any unit actually made in the UK.

did u read what just put crabtree mem wylex and others are british companys and there all made in china and MOST OF THE BREAKERS GOT RE CALLED BECAUSE THEY WERE FAULTY . they sent teams out to propertys fitted with them and had to be replaced free

so tell me a few makes that are manafactured in england .after 40 years of wiring and callouts i wouldnt realy know whats decent

Wouldn't know myself for sure, but surely there must be one at least !
The one in my place is Crabtree, marked, made in the UK, 20 years old or so, been fine.

that was 24 years ago as i said they all got recalled . MADE IN CHINA NOW along with75 pecent of everything else electrical

Well they didn't do mine. So it'll probably go faulty now !

Square D domestic range is my first choice as they never change the breaker design so if you want a new breaker you can get one. All the others have changed there breakers at least twice in the last 10 years. Hager are also a good make but I have little experience of there smaller stuff.



As for being made In the UK other than busman making fuses I don't thing there is any

Found the Chint stuff - not sure about that though, probably because I've never heard of them before?

Square D - I presume that is the same as (or a product of) Schneider?

Yes, I think Schneider electric now own a lot of the big names like Square D, Telemecanique and Merlin Gerin.

I tend to lean towards Hager - when I had the extension built I had a 14 way consumer unit with rcbos installed and the quality is good. I have hager stuff for the consumer unit, ashley junction boxes (which are also hager under a different name) and MK sockets.

Huh, just found Hager on the TLC site and it says 'Manufactured in UK'!!

I have used hager for getting on 20 years, good stuff but a little pricy compared to wylex

Thats because Wylex must be made in China then ! I'd much rather pay more and have UK made.

all you will be paying for is the extra manufacting costs from british workforce...chances are the parts are chinese made and put together here

Strictly speaking, if thats the case they should specify as such. I really hope it isn't the case.
