Is there a thumbwheel on the edge somewhere?, I had a new laptop some years ago and did everthing to raise the volume with the on-screen controls, then found the thumbwheel on the front edge I had knocked

You could try a program called Vlan. It is free and will play almost any thing, video and audio. Its volume control has an over boost to 200%. Mad a diferance on my fujitsu. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ also has audio shift to allow for out of sync sound and graphic equalisers as well as streaming.

I know on one laptop we owned you had to go into the control panel - audio settings -select output...to get the earphone socket to work, then reverse the settings for the small inbuilt speakers.
I would have thought the modern sound cards had done away with that nuisance...but maybe worth a look

alot of laptops with windows 7 ask whether its headphone or aux output when you plug something in go through all the audio setting in control panel

impedance now your getting technical
i doubt it would make much difference with headphones i would think most domestic head phones would be no lower then 8 ohms and maybe upto 32 some professional headphones are even higher
Impedance won't be the issue, even the playback volume on it's own speakers isn't that high. There is no level control on the headphones.
My external speaker system is great, it has it's own amp though, so much louder. I may modify it by installing a headphone socket.
I reckon the computer level is limited to prevent liability for causing hearing damage to kids.

some laptops just have a smaller amp then others which could be one of the manufacturers sneaky ways to improve battery life

Just checked with my geeky computor whizzkid boring neighbour...he is fairly sure you will find a barrow load of settings if you go to your soundcard that will allow you to alter the sound properties including the volume.

Most headphones have a volume control, however some headphones have an amplifier in them as well, this can increase the supplied volume by quite a bit, can also but not always increase hiss and distortion.
Small USB amplifiers work reasonably well and usually provide a clearer amplification.

Frayed knot !! The headphones are totally passive without a level control. Just went through all the settings on the sound device and nothing increases the volume further. Although I did discover the equalization was set to club !! Reset to flat and designated this as my user defined setting. Volume still too low though. Might try that media player download before resorting to a usb amp.

if you're running 7 then its oftern a programme you have openthat is also trying to make sound so it dulls them both down equally

If you use Winamp (or most other audio software other than WMP) then turn the Pre-amp setting up a little and play with the EQ settings, wont get a lot with out it distorting but its better than nothing.

I was using a Toshiba at work that was the same - very low volume levels and despite my twiddling the volume control at the front and searching for fancy drivers or 3rd party software, nothing doing. VLC will give you extra volume, but not much use if you're streaming stuff.
