disposable usage time and other options

first of ive found this site so useful over the last couple of days and hope to be a regular contributor as time goes on and am proably get on with a few of the migmate mods as surprise surprise ive got a sip migmate 105t lol but i did only pay £46 for it but for now ive got a few questions

i got myself a mig welder a few days ago and a couple days ago was laying some welds down on a wee 30cm by 10cm plate then yesterday was welding on an exhaust and did about 20cm of weld before the gas ran out. is this normal for a disposable bottle of argon/co2 mix (sip one from halfords) or did in leak when i forgot to turn the tap off ?

if the disposable bottle dont last very long what other options are there, atm im looking at doing quite a bit of welding but that wont always be the case so am unsure if a rental bottle is the way to go. what sort of options do i have in my area (sittingbourne in kent) and what sort of costs are we looking at?

about right for disposables... not a cheap option.

how long would i expect to get out of a 9l adams gas bottle as opposed to a 60l disposable bottle? and woluld it be worth getting a flow gauge to be able to accurately set the flow to economize and would i need a different regulator being ive got a 'hobby' welder?

Welcome to the forums

The AR/CO2 bottles last about 6 minutes of use.

The disposable CO2 bottles last about 6 times as long as the Ar/CO2 ones. Still expensive to use nut not bad for real low use.

CO2 is not as easy on real thin metal but doable.

Check the rent free gas suppliers list in the shielding gas section. That is the best option.

A 9l bottle may be filled to 137 to 230 bar. That gives 1233 to 2070L of gas or 123 and 207 minutes of use respectively.

You will need a regulator to fit a refillable bottle. It will have a flow gauge.

An Adams 9 litre would give you much more gas than the disposable bottles .
However an even better option would be one of our 10 litre bottles filled to 200 BAR ( Adams are 9 Litre filled to 137 BAR ).
A 10 litre bottle filled to 200 BAR would give you 2000 litres of uncompressed gas !

ok alan that would be helpful as there is a jayars in sittingbourne, what would i be looking at for a 10 or 20 litre bottle of your argon/co2 mix? my first project is gonna be a bit tv, game centre and mig time music centre stand lol and then a trolley for my welder so am gonna be after a decent amount of gas

I have an old Clarke 150EN (set for gas) MIG welder which is going strong and I use it for bodywork repairs on my cars. Old cars now needing lots of patches!!

Now that I am doing more welding and most of it outside I am now having problems with the extremely low capacity with the disposable Argon/CO2 bottles from Machine Mart/Halfords etc

I never realsied just how little weding time you can do with them and I have even bought a new regulator because I thought the old one must be broken!!

I am now looking to convert to the larger sized bottles and would appreciate help and availability in the North Wiltshire/Gloucestershire area.

excellent, thanks mate, ill get the bits as soon as i get payed and ide like to use weldequip when i can to support the forum

once ive got used to mig welding i may just have to buy a tig lol just for fun

in all seriousness though i suffer quite badly from depression but when i get the welding torch out and the mask goes on all i have to worry about is the weld pool and so far ive found it very beneficial, maybe i should have done welding and fab at college instead of motor vehicle but there you just wish i had the money to get the kit i really want and the money to get the materials to do the projects i want to

A big thanks to Alan from South West Gas Supplies and Weldequip (no connections only a satisfied customer) and the advice from this forum.

After a quick talk Alan yesterday (Thursday) I arranged to get my 10Litre Argon/Co2 cylinder from APD (Cirencester) and a £10 cashback offer. Collected it the same day great service

Then it got better. Purchased an industrial gauge and adapter (and Siflite helmet) from Weldequip from this forum. Order went thru at 4.00pm Thursday and goods arrived Friday 10am. What fantastic service.

Now sorted. Just have to get off my backside and do some welding!
