Motor or inverter

Hi guys, I have eventually ended up with a Fobco 7/8. What will be the best option to have it working well on a single phase domestic supply, change the motor or fit an invertor. Pic. attached of current motor spec. [untested btw]. I would like ideally to have reverse on demand.

those old motors work well and it would run fine on inverter.

Looking at the plate you only need the ceap type of 240V single ph to 3ph 220V outputs. Usually wired dirct to the motor.

All the same a trip to Machine Mart for a 3/4hp 240V. Easy to wire up Cap start, just need a forward reverse switch.
May have to alter the mounting and or the pulley.
Done the small mill years ago.

I have a very similar drill (a progress) and because the motor wasn't dual voltage i simply replaced it with a 1hp single phase unit, i went to a local bearing factor who stock motors and bought the only brand they did in that size which was an australian brand, it bolted right on and works fine , plenty of torque , i was drilling 1 inch holes last week with it and no problems.

Thanks, can you suggest a suitable one that will give soft start and reverse. Pardon my ignorance with this, not a sparks but competent with advice.

Hi what is shaft size?, mine is 25.4mm, seems an odd size.

Well, 25.4mm isn't an odd size for a motor shaft to those of us "of a certain age" , since it is exactly one good old-fashioned inch.

all the inverters I've seen allow you to programme the start and stop ramps and also a simple switch will give forward or reverse option. There is also the choice of controlling speed with a potentiometer if required?

Cheers Alec, I really need an ideal make/model, something specific to source. I have contacted a couple of suppliers but some may advise the best [profit/ overkill] for them and not for you.

There is a guy on the "Homeworkshop" website http://www.homeworkshop.org.uk/ called Gavin Oseman ( in Malvern ), who regularly advertises reasonably-priced inverters for sale. His last posting there was Tuesday 12 July. I'm not sure if he offers advice ...

0.75 Hp is approx 0.55 kW.

The "Optidrive E2" will do the job, but it will have to be set up ( i.e. initial parameters entered ), and it does not have a local speed control knob. To get that control ( as opposed to pushing and holding Up/Down buttons on the inverter's front panel), you will have to buy the optional remote keypad, or wire up your own potentiometer, or buy the more expensive model in the IP55 sealed enclosure. Many of the inverters the "Homeworkshop" guy offers ( see Advert ID 8043 ) are already programmed, and come with a free control box, which could be clipped onto the side of your pillar drill . Note that the existing motor on/off switch on your drill will be disabled - the motor must be wired directly to the 3-phase output of the inverter, and all control done on the inverter side.

Update

Direct Drives have just mooved to new premises, so be a little patient as they are not quite up to speed yet,
my own experience with Dave,-- had 3 inverters/converters off him and used him for some excellent installation wiring information.
gets my recomendation.

Drives Direct moved last year, remember going to new premises to collect Oct 2010.
Also had three drives since then, no emails replied to since Oct, can blind you with science eventually getting through on the phone, hours, weeks, months may pass.
