new photo driving licence

I was looking to get my old paper driving licence changed to a new licence which i assume now has to be the new Big Brother style photo licence. (hey i got a few points to come off it and be clean again!

So i am told i need to have my passport photo used as the photo for my licence. I give my go ahead and my passport number (my passport photo magically appears online) I click the go ahead button. But a few days later i get knocked back as my passport has expired. (i presume thats why)

So now they are saying i have to renew my passport at £77 just so i can have the privelege of paying £20 for a new photo licence!

Is that correct. Is having a passport the only way you can get a photo driving licence?

i had to renew my photo and did it at the post office in town. some of them have a digital both so they do the pic electronically and signature

You mean renew a current photo licence or change an old paper one for a photo licence? Because i mean the latter. They can do that at the post office ?

I'm to young to have had the old paper licence! you have to renew the photo every ten years but you can only use a passport less then five years and mine was 6!

FWIW the old paper licences remain valid until you're in 70's or whenever it is you have to reapply. With a photo licence the photo part needs renewing every 10 years or so and yep, they charge you for the privlege and (unless they've fixed things) possibly lose some/all of your vehicle entitlements in the process

All im concerned about is to get my old paper licence clean of points. Do they still do that and give back the paper licence?

Good call although knowing the DVLA it wouldn't surprise me if they wouldn't accept a copy as proof- wasn't there a m/bike traffic copper that had to resit his bike test due to the DVLA screwing up?

Zardoz, if the points are expired they're expired. Getting them physically removed will mean changing to a photo license. Personally i wouldn't bother unless you have to (change of address for example), either way i'd 'misplace' your license i.e. that way you keep origional proof that you exist and have passed a driving test when you find it again

when i changed address i did it on line and kept the old one till i had the new one in my hand. i might see if there is a way of changing photo early so that i can get my passport photo in step with my driving licence so i can do it on line in future so it doesn't have to leave my site till i get the new one

Trouble is when the swines returned it after pointing it years ago the plastic wallet was gone. Now i cant find one to fit it for love nor money, not even on ebay, (they only sell new ones the wrong size at £4 for a bit of placcy) If im to keep y old licence, it needs a holder though its falling to pieces.

I decided if I have to send my licence off for anything I would get it copied and witnessed legally by a local solicitor (notorized?) would cost a few quid but a lot cheaper than a few hundred (and the aggro) of regaining my motorcycle entitlement!

and if they messed up your car entitlement then you would loose trailer, 7.5ton etc and end with a mickey mouse one like me!

Had a rummage in my documents draw and found the following plastic sleeves:
140 x 86mm plain
140 x 86mm with central fold gap
115 x 86mm plain
95 x 80mm plain

If one will fit, pm address to me

why bother changing i have the old one with expired points on it / it makes no odds the old bill have records of when and where u got them along with any other information they have on u stored on there computers

i need to change my address, update my picture and have an endorsement removed.

does anyone know if ill be charged for this?

Not sure which i did as carn't remember wether i said i lost it or it was stolen ?
was replaced free off charge (( with NO points on it )) ,, I would stick with what you have got unless you NEED to change it ALSO if you do send it Photo copy it as when it comes back it might be short of a few sections that you are able to drive !! AS a couple of my friends have lost items off there liecence ,, One came back without his (( HGV )) on it and took him 4 months argueing with dvla to get it put back on and the only way was because he had photocopyed it,, They even said there was no infomation on the system that he had ever passed his hgv test,, SO JUST BE AWARE !!!

all that you need is a pasport sized photo taken in one of the booths and get someone from the list on the form to sign it to verify you are who you say you are ive signed a few for people i know
