Hand cleaner

We used to use Deb something or other. Deb Lime i think. Wall mounted jobbie.

We started using some orange stuff, The Really Good stuff i think it was called, Tetrasol. Rubbish. The polygrains settle out of it, so half of it is thin, runny useless stuff. After that the bits come out and its ok.

The muck on me hands has gradually got more and more ingrained as the week has gone on.

What do you use at work?

Use barrier cream, then the crap does not get so deep in the pores. Plus if you can use nitrile gloves under your welding gloves etc. makes a huge differance. Down side is you will need lorry loads of them.

Gloves, like the perfect poly ones, barely know theyre on. Great for general handling.

Obviously still get dirty. Cleaner we use is a beaded one, orangey pink colour. Think its druemex.

Dont bother with the pump, its a pain. Just have a 15 litre bucket next to the sink

I use a mixture DAZ washing powder and a cheep washing up liquid and mix some up just give a good rub in and use a scrubbing brush as well Or ANY house hold scouring powder and a washing up liquid ,, And used a mixture of all never had any probs with this and its cheep as well,,

Comma Manista for me..lifts the grease out and has a conditioner in it too

rob a mixer out of the kitchen then mix washing liquid and white spirits 50/50 great degreaser aswell

If you have problems with sensitive/dry skin substitute the washin powder with sugar in washing up liquid it works just as well as an abrasive without any of the nasty chemical's. As always prevention is better than cure so don't forget to barrier up before doing any dirty work

It goes a bit gooey if you leave the lid off.

Don't like the idea of washing up liquid, I understand it can cause dermatitus.

if i am assembling a brand new engine from scratch all new clean components,which i will be doing in the next five years permitting i don't have to live away from home to do an apprenticeship with Rolls Royce in Bristol, would i need to use barrier cream

I would use a barrier because even though everything is clean you will still be using lubrucants which may affect your skin. I'm sure firm like RR will provide any necessary protection.

Yes ..most definitely ...you still get mineral oil / hydraulic oil or cutting oil traces on the surfaces as well as fine metal particles .

RR will give you some of the finest barrier creams and hand cleaners around such as Rozalex barrier cream and Rozalex waterless hand cleaner .

For your apprenticship you should get a health and saftey education par none which will include indepth personal cleanliness as they don't want to put you on an expensive apprentice ship only to see you trashed with dermatitis or cancer .


Re the cleaning of ingrained gunge ..I used to work at a bit of blacksmithing /metal smithing every now and again as well as working as an electrician / mechanic on the mighty Antar tank transporters etc. By lunch time it was not unusual to have to strip off and shower , redress in clean gear then bung on clean overalls & barrier cream for the after lunch session of work .

My hands were usually like ball bearings on the finger tips ,finger nails black like a horse leech under each nail and covered in black leading over the rest especially if I was playing with any of the exhaust systems on the diesel engined Antars.

Even the green swarfega works , by working the cleaner well into your hands , under the nails usually with a sprinkle of borax powder .
We used to use simple pigshair bristle nail brushes to really work it in and then wash off in clean warn water . After this clean off we always then washed our hands again using a sprinkle of borax powder ( it's cheap & softens the water fantastically and does not dry out your skin ) and simple unscented tablet soap ..again use the nail brush to deep de gunge the nails & cuticles and rinse and dry your hands well no rushing and leaving wet skin to get chapped /opened up .
Some of us ..me included use a spot of drapoline baby bum cream / Newlon or Oil of Olay on our hands as an after wash and dryness protector ..it helped/ helps keep the skin hydrated .. after lunch the barrier cream went on again .

Hands were also always properly well washed before and after going to the loo for a number one or number two.

My favourite is Solopol. It uses walnut shell chips, so it doesn't settle in the swan neck of the sink. Furthermore te wallnut shell chips are very soft on your hands. It is a little more expensive, but good quality stuff.

Already mentioned I know, but if you aren't using barrier cream then you are missing a trick. It matters much less how good the soap is if your hands are easier to clean. I use Rozalex Driguard. I value my skin and have seen what dermatitis looks like. Using things like white spirit and even toluene!!!! (yes, seriously caught some guys washing their faces in toluene) will de-fat the skin and allow bacteria to lodge in there and cause you problems.
