when a comp tank corrodes with rust its generaly at the bottom and just pinholes with a slight hissing when filled .i did a test filling a one gallon oil can with square crimped ends and it took 50 psi before it blew up

Considering how many compressors are about, and how infrequently you hear about them killing anyone, i would suggest that the "blowing up" stories are disproportionate to the risk.

Ile wrap the tank in gaffa tape, that should hold it if it goes.

I've seen loads of truck air tanks rust through normally under the mounting straps but I've never seen one explode.

I'm sure I watched some myth busters type thing about them exploding... they inflated some way over pressure to test them

they all went with a hell of a bang... but the tank was mostly intact, they'd crack open/big and wide but they'd still be all in one piece

a bit like if you squeeze a carton of milk etc, you get bit split

It can happen and very nasty when it does.But yes very rare!

Sounds like Mrs Robo style of thinking, she asked me to have a look at her brakes as the pedal was soft, I found a pin hole in one of the flexi hoses and told her I'd have to replace it, she asked if I could put some tape over the hole until I got the new hose.

Sounds like Mrs Robo style of thinking, she asked me to have a look at her brakes as the pedal was soft, I found a pin hole in one of the flexi hoses and told her I'd have to replace it, she asked if I could put some tape over the hole until I got the new hose.

That would be extremely dangerous. However a well placed cable tie would sort it.

that's what I meant... they go with a hell of a bang and peel open... but there's no shrapnel flying everywhere etc.

as long as it's out of the way and there's nothing next to it which will be shot towards you, you'll be fine

well compressors are interesting its quiet so turn your volume up a bit more

Tank failure - there is a risk for sure! It is pressure you dealing with.

Tanks are dated for a reason - big tanks have inspection holes so they can be measured.

If your really worried about it - a "blast wall" is the solution. Few concrete blocks to contain the explosion you may never have.

They make special Legato blocks for the purpose.

if anyone is so concerned just do a hydro test on it filled with water and pumped to 150 percent of its rated capacity

Well its now earning its keep...neutral wire had come off one side of the pressure switch and some clout had rounded the small screw on switch cover and could not get the cover off so they deemed it scrap. ive run it through 5 empty to full cycles up to 125psi and she is perfect. new oil in pump and thats it...happy here, i have inspected inside of tank with cam and its more clean metal than red..2015 tank so thats ok too.
