Colchester Bantam price check?

I’ve been looking at bigger lathes than my CSB. I’ve seen this on ebay as a bit of a project. The electrics aren’t a problem for me but it’s missing a few spendy bits like the chucks (and backplate) and some change wheels.

It’s £500 plus £70 delivery. I’ve written off the £70 delivery because whichever lathe I buy will have similar costs, if not more to get it to me. So £500 (don’t think I’d bid more than that for it) then gradually buying bits for it like the chuck etc.

Just need a 2nd opinion and a bit of a sanity check on the price.

Won't be much use to you until you get a backplate and chuck fitted. D1-3 if my research is correct. That's going to cost at least £80+ and then there's the cost of a 3 jaw self centering chuck, followed by another backplate and 4 jaw.

The 4 way tool post is fine, but you may want a qctp and the associated holders.

If this lathe uses change wheels, 3d printing is worth considering.

I don't think that's a bad price. Delivery is usually the big problem unless you have a van or a trailer. All depends on condition really, which you can't tell from a photo. I'd want a good chat with the vendor to find out why it's been stripped of parts and paint and tidied up, though. Is it local, can you give it a look over?

Is it a massive upgrade over your CSB? They are the smallest Colchesters.

£70 for delivery is cheap. Will that be kerbside? I'd assume so.

This guy repeatedly lists machines on Facebook marketplace stating they are no longer required, hence for sale. He must be a dealer. That may not be a problem but it's worth knowing.

The cheapest backplate I’ve seen was £100, then like you say cost of chuck. From what I can find online the bantam and CSB take the same size QCTP so I’d be able to swap it onto that from the CSB.

This is my biggest problem, no lifting kit, vehicle or trailer suitable for shifting lathes. It’s relatively local but the auction ends before I’d be able to take a look at it.

He said they’d do it themselves in their own van (it’s a dealer) so assume they’d have some form of lifting kit to get it off their van so I reckon a chat with them before hand could get them to drop it where I want it in the garage, it’s easy access.

Thanks, this is the kind of straight advice I’m after. I’ve zoomed in on the listing pictures and they are definitely missing, I wasn’t aware of them so hadn’t noticed they were missing. I’m guessing they’ll be quite spendy to source because a quick google doesn’t bring replacements up.

Even if they were there would the opinion still be don’t touch it?

I was just looking at that one myself. Interesting. From his previous ads, it's fairly plain there has been a aLOT of essing about, with the same nachine sold severat times then relisted due to timewasters. You can actually see thos lathe in the background of a listing from 2 years ago.
Likely to be a bargain - half tempted, but luckily only one glass of wine tonight...

Looks like it's had an emulsion repaint too. D1-3 stuff is expensive as other small lathes use it as well.
Look for another one.

I concur.

In simplistic terms buy one thats working with all the bits. And if you dont have the kit to move it, there are people like Landylift of what ever who will do it for you.

Once dropped of small ish lathes move fairly easily with an engine hoist and bits of tube, two men and a crow bar. Unless its gravel…..I assisted a friend to move an M300 over gravel down the side of a house to a back garden shed. 3 sheets of 3/4 ply sorted the gravel issue.

I hadn't noticed, but looking through his old adverts this lathe has been "sold" before. You might be right about time wasters.

I have looked at a few not far from me in Kent with chucks and tooling for £650 - £750. So as its the tooling and accessories that cost money, IMO that is too expensive for a project, unless there is a compelling reason to have it.
