Strange it let me in before but now it's paywalled.
Talking about increasing numbers of large engines having bearing failures etc. They are having to use thinner and thinner oils to meet emissions standards but manufacturing tolerances are getting tighter and tighter and harder to achieve because of it.

in 2001 ish the design of the mazda rx8 was nearing completion. the designers were tasked in formulating a specification for the oil. after a rather long period of research and development the engineers decided on a mineral 10w40. 15w 40 in warmer climates. this was passed to the higher ups in mazda, who kicked it back, and said no, emissions are affected by such a thick oil, do better.

mazda finally settled on 5w40. the result of which the primary failure mode on correctly serviced cars was rear stationary bearing failure (this is discounting cars what had early failure because of abuse and neglect)

otoh, most specialists, myself included, and most engine builders specify 10w40, as the original engineers did. i have seen engines that have been run on 10w40 go 140k miles with no appreciable bearing wear. go figure.

interesting , as mitsi l2oo recomends 5/30, I ran it in on semi synth 10/40 ,after rebuild, now put 5/30 synthetic in as colder weather draws in, but feel more comfortable with 10/40 as this thin stuff is very watery !

my pug runs on 0 -30 its expensive but thats whats recomended .a lot of hi spec cars run on it so thats what i use , i knock the stop start off

Today’s ridiculously long service schedules are the biggest engine killer I think.
An oil and filter change every 5000 miles is a good insurance policy and not expensive if you can do it yourself.

50 sovs for the oil and filter. generaly do mine every 8 thousand miles not the ten recomended

I had to laugh when Piaggio extended the service interval to 6000 miles on an engine that only holds 1.3l of oil, presumably to make it look better for cheaper servicing.

Same with the pee they call engine oil now, just to scrimp an extra 0.5mpg at the detriment of the engine on modern cars.

My two cents worth. I have a Subaru Outback XT and the recomendation is 0-20 synthetic. Not only that but the service interval is 15000km I bought the car new and changed the oil and filter my self at 9000km after returning from a 6000km long trip. 1st year service was then at 13000kms and now 2nd year was at 18000kms. I drive this thing very gently to see what I can get fuel wise out of it, 7.7l / 100km over the 18000km so I'm OK with that, also turn off the auto start / stop.

I had 2 wildtrack 2l turbo diesel. 2 years age difference. Newer one had stop start and an electric fan. 0.5mpg difference between them. But the older one had slightly wider tyres! So in real use no difference at all

I do the same when driving our Skoda Yeti. I find it irritating and sometimes bordering on being dangerous as it sometimes cuts out at T junctions when I’m waiting for a gap and need instant acceleration.

My new van has 32,000 mile service intervals. The last one was 30,000 miles and it did 176,000 miles and was still running fine when I sold it.

Stop/Start. Big hp engines, fine tolerances, every component minimised to reduce friction losses, watery oil that must run back to the sump almost instantly an engine stops.

Add in lower road limits with Big Brother/ Stasi levels of Surveillance, traffic, and a car that spends its life at probably less than 10% of its power & torque for most of it.

Then stir in ridiculous systems like forcing the engine to re-breath its own exhaust gasses, and/or run so lean its borderline knocking/pinking, and on fuel that's had corrosive Methanol added.

I get stories in work of relatively new cars failing in under 50k miles for various differing but expensively terminal maladies. Supposed workhorse panel vans having serious engine failures as early as 60-odd K miles.

Yet it was not uncommon for cars like my neighbours example (a 1998 Mitsubishi Carisma 1.6L petrol as it happens, but plenty of other cars would too) ran like a watch at 250k miles without its engine being apart once, while still cheerfully returning 40mpg on a run).

Let's call a spade a spade - modern cars are built as cheap as possible, with pre-determined short lifespans & costly (or uneconomical) repairs (today a garage customer told me Mitsubishi quoted him £3400 or something close - for an L200 cylinder head (on a 4x4 pickup that had shat itself at just 45K miles - holed piston, bent valves).

It's a sick joke that ANY new car - is "saving the environment" - because its usable life is poor - so you might need 5 of them to do what 1 would do before.

It is forced Consumerism dressed in a very thin veneer excuse of "Emissions" IMO.

Was going to mention Subaru's 0w20 oil but you beat me to it. 5w30 is the more sensible option I think.

The last one was a Citroen relay with a ford 2.2 diesel the new one is a Vauxhall movano 2.2 diesel possibly a stellantis engine. The oil for both is 5w 30 synthetic

yup . I am still old school , change oil and filter at 5k , its way cheaper overall than blowing a engine .
