Love this rule.
Make a pile of the things that you have not used in 2 years.
Then consider that pile for things that might come in handy for exemption.
Then put it all back again

I've a 42 year rule and counting. Been collecting stuff since I was 16 if not earlier and still got most of it. My poor kids!

When we moved up here, I applied the 19 year rule on the contents of the loft! There were boxes unopened from when we moved in. I didn't even open them, they all went to the tip. I couldn't afford the sentimental side to start looking.

I used a 5 yr rule, then kids, life, rugby club, grandkids all changed that. Shockingly, I think I'm now on a 20 yr rule...

I don't like the sound of that. Throwing stuff in the skip? That sent a shudder down my spine. But luckily for me, I don't have any mates, so I'm in the clear.....

Mmmm ok, i like that idea of a change around , why though.

Okay my workshop is bigger but when I bought the M300 off Rob it wouldn't fit where the Myford was so I moved my workbench out from by the stairs to the office and situated the lathe in its place.

Consequently I've now got the table in the middle of the workshop and the welders are under the bench. The gas bottles are under the stairs. One benefit is that if I need to work on a vehicle I can still reach a fair bit without having to move them and I can also do welding on the bench etc.

The massive benefit is I can now go down into the workshop turn on the gas, the welder and crack on with welding something up quickly. The same is true of the lathe and the pillar drill, I can just turn them on and use them without having to clear stuff. Need to sort out the milling machine now...

Nah, 5pm today I was using an ancient spanner in anger for the first time in my 15 years of ownership. Time/ life/ bad availability for imperial tools/ doing stuff out of hours. Not everything has to make complete rational sense if you can afford the space - i'm sure this non-urgent hobby job waiting a week would have been more sensible than 15 years of unused spanner ownership but it depends what you're trying to achieve. Floor space has value: i'll concede that

I've made/adapted storage to fit the space I have available, its evolved over time as I've acquired stuff but works for me. Yes it looks chaotic but there is some rationale behind it

Plastic trays from a school in a storage unit I knocked up to fit between the lathe and mill, has most of the smaller offcuts of metal plus drill bits and other stuff



Some more storage for metal bits, fits between the mill and wall



And on top of that is some pigeon holes for stuff



Downside is its a PITA to cleanup all the swarm from the mill

Bench was made to fit between the pillar and doorway (scuse the mess, tidy up is overdue)



Welding and plasma table 'nest' under the workbench and I just pull them out to use them



Some shelves I made to hold the bench and toolbit grinder that sits between the toolboxes and above the bin



This is 2 different sets of racking that are nested so I can fit my welders, bandsaw underneath and then store stuff on the shelves above. The racking has been cut to fit the space available



I don't do lin bins, yes they are nice but dont give you much storage for the space they take up. Much prefer small ice cream tubs as you can stack them

I like these, came from B&M and weren't expensive, great for organising small stuff like nuts, washers, crimps, hose clips and so on, they don't take up loads of space as they stack nicely

Part of my metal storage under my bandsaw stand for shortish lengths is the use of 18 inch long length of unused soil waste vent pipe placed back to front under the saw stand on a self made shelf and on the wooden castored base I made .

Along the bottom two shelves are six or so open ended tube length on each shelf , inserted in each are various diameters of solid rod or bar tubular steel & tubular alu or plastics. Again inside stored tube are smaller tubes too , The spaces between the waste tubes are also stuffed with things like 10 mm or less diameter steel rod or small equal angle iron or alu..
