I wouldn't think it was an investment for only 12 posts tbh
I've done hundreds of the b'stards, all by hand, wiggling a pilot hole with a bar and sledge hammer, then knocking the posts in with a home made post rammer thingy.
Luckily I'll never have to do that again !

What's wrong with a fencing spade? 12 posts is nothing!

This sort of thing will dig you a deep hole quickly. Or use the method suggested by @Porkypine if you don't mind splitting a few posts.

I never split a post with the post rammer ( obviously bashing em with a sledge will do that !..the sledge is for the pilot hole with a digging bar )
The post rammer I made from a bit of circa 5'' dia. pipe, the handles from 1'' gas pipe, the bought chineseium rammers are always crap, flimsy, and the 'barrel' is never quite wide enough I found.

We have been putting new fence posts in around work this week. Petrol post hole auger wouldn't touch it, very hard clay and stones. Used a Kango in the end . 7 posts have took 2 days so far….

The 2 stroke augers are great fun, roughly £150ish. I've done about 30 posts with mine in clay and it had no problem. One of the best tools I've bought.

Mine is unlikely to get any further use and looking to sell it if your interested? I have fitted a new cyl piston kit but it would take me a few days to get it fully reassembled and tested.

If theres any bigger stones or roots you'll also want a narrow bladed mattock for smashing it out.
The normal mattocks sold in shops are too wide. Mine is the same weight rather than the mini one they sell.

Those two handed digging spades are poo not good for anything, not even for getting the last dirt out - I was lying down with my arm in the holes.

A wet/dry vacuum might work well for dirt extraction, I never tried it.

The job will probably be finished by the time I received the auger. I shall percivere with the kango and spade. You are correct about the hole diggers I too grab the last bits out by hand.

I made one using a plaster stirrer and a 75mm spiral bit,

I just did two, 2' deep holes for 4" posts in my ground by hand, cheaper than the gym! I used one of those old man style, 4 pronged digging things...except mine has 4 blades. Similar but far superior to the picture below. Made I think by Spear & Jackson and no longer available. Dig/twist to the depth of the prong. Then remove the churned up soil with the two blade post hole digger. Not that easy at all as along the way there were large flints and conifer roots. Had to loosen these with an ad hoc digging bar made from a length of years old hex bar with a point one end and flat blade the other.

Another reason I'm seriously considering a Chinese digger with auger attachment.

Yesterday I was using a half inch rod to make the initial hole six inches deep , took it out then followed it with an12 inch SDS point hammer drill then an 18 inch chisel tooled medium breaker , this has usually got me deep enough to use 35 mm dia six foot pointed wroisting bar to rotate round and make deeper diablo shaped holes , had to keep lifting it out or it would have got trapped and never come out .
Once 2 feet deep I had to pulled it out before it started to get stuck by soil suction . Took it out the final time and slipped the pointed post in the hole, then tapped it down to the laser line height with a roughneck ovalid faced 2.5 kg sledge hammer not a split post out of the 17 put in .

At another home , the ground was red clay & stone former large building site ....as hard as concrete when dried out so I used a metre long 19 mm SDS drill in my Hilti hammer drill to get a hole then after taking it out filled the hole with water several time as I put the other 22 post holes in cominc back tothe first well soaked hole I was able to use a small 2 inch wide blade on a broom shaft to loosen the damped soil & stones and suck it out with an industrial vacuum cleaner . It only took three days to get all holes two feet plus , deep and bottomed with four or so inches of quick set all at the same laser line level .
On the fourth day I was able to use a home made wheeled device ( using to mountain bike wheels & frames to raise the recycled plastic posts up and lower then precisely in the holes ... using a welded up collapsible removable frame between posts to get them perfectly spaced and vertical then bedded them in with quickset .

A decent piower washer with narrow jet and a decent sixed wet & dry vacuum washer is also an asset if you have water & power when making holes in difficult ground ,

Heavy ground I use a pinch bar, must be twenty pounds in weight. Not much stops it. The spoil gets scooped out by hand or a small spade.

here the ground is all stoney and compacted grave / sand mix.....and I mean hard......
all I use is my Hilti with a 20mm conc drill and just drill a mess where I want the hole
then simply dig out the loose stuff....no surrounding ground damage....
