Nomad has relocated - again.

It won't be a big surprise for anyone who knows me to hear (and it's not difficult for anyone else to guess) that I often pack my bags and relocate when I get an interesting job offer.

The last big move turned out to be a bit unusual I'd spent 2 years around Devon & the South West looking to relocate from the North East when I got the offer of doing some work in Portugal.
I liked it so much I decided to settle there rather than return to the UK.
Last week I passed the official Portuguese language exams which is one of the main requirement needed to qualify for long term residency.

The plan for now is to spend as much time enjoying life in Portugal as I can with trips back to the UK to keep in touch with things there.

I see fun times ahead. Life recently has been a mix of taking on projects when it's something interesting, tinkering with old cars (lots of non rusty vehicles for sale here from the 80s & 90s cheap - often parked up with silly easy-to-fix faults), also swimming & lazing on the many beaches ( I spent a couple of fun hours there yesterday with a friend - it's difficult to have a conversation when the ladies volleyball team decide to practice next to us on the beach, very distracting).

id say that requirement is needed in the uk the amouny of times ive heard we dont speak english is fun and you know many a time there lieing

the same can be said for the green cross code as well ive had way too many close calls where they dont stop look and listen before they cross the road and instead just walk right out into traffic the worst ones being the ones where they gone inbetween parked cars and then crossed the road without even looking

in my area you seriously need car cctv or even a wide view dash cam just to prove that your not at fault

Sounds a bit like me in an earlier life, bumbling around living wherever seemed interesting for a while, but in the far east. At one point I nearly applied for Filipino nationality/passport, and one of the requirements was you must speak one local language fluently. English is the language of their government and politics, so that was easily satisfied. I never did go any further with it though.

I spent a couple of years working as a mechanic in a yacht yard in Singapore. That was an interesting learning curve, considering I’d never set foot on a yacht before, and I was a machinist by trade. I had a work permit as well. Apparently most yacht owners were westerners and they weren’t too impressed with the local guys ‘work ethic’, and I was often asked just to be on a boat when locals were working on it, ‘to keep an eye on them’.

Most of the locals did have serious skill sets, with paint, fibreglass, carpentry etc, but mechanical repairs seemed beyond them.

I was offered a job in Thailand, big yacht company near Pattaya, but it never worked out, so I got a job offshore, for the next 24 years…

Because its where your Mrs tells you to live! Once the need to commute to work is removed the options are endless. But baking in the sun wears a bit thin eventually, you need the odd grey cold wet day!

Cyprus looked interesting...quite a low income threshold to relocate there.

First step is downsize my UK life I think and shift stuff around to make a move easier.

Used to really like the Algarve...but it's silly money these days. Do Portugal still offer the investment route in?

Cyprus gets really hot in the summer, I would struggle to get much done over those months...
