Noise cancelling ear buds / ear muffs , which one ?

So I do a bit of clay popping , what distracts me when on a good run of hitting is the remarks made by others in the squad which in the ends is enough to make a miss , which they find ammusing ! its not meant or taken in a nasty sence but its not a cheap sport . So what is the collective knowledge on noise cancelling buds/muffs that could blank out the chatter completly and obviously be hearing protection for the bang ? all advice appreciated , but don t bother saying ignore it . its only banter and all that cobblers , as its only banter to those that can t get a reasonable score , the guys that are good don t do it at all , quite the opposite. thanks

3M again they do different dB. Types SNR37 is good but I think there is a higher specification as well

I use peltor sport tac electronic ones for all my shooting, air rifle/ shotgun/ rifle. We’ve just done a trial at work on ear defenders. I was involved. We had normal muffs and plugs and electronic ones. All of the plugs with the exception of one weren’t very good. The Sens were good but you’re talking a grand for a set. The muffs were all effective but some were not any good when shooting, they lay on the cheek piece and lifted off you ears. The peltors were liked by most of the testers

I use in ear moulded ones. You can get them with the electronic bit in, but thats to help you hear the banter while still being protected.
Never seen or heard of an ear defender that blocks out all sound!

People with much more knowledge than me won't allow use of noise cancelling ear plugs/defenders in the plants I go in - they have the potential to cause more harm than good. I'd be wary of the same with the sudden noise of the shot.

The ear plugs under ear defenders is used in a lot of the South American plants I've been in, but not in North America, or Europe, even ones owned by the same company - it really does block out more noise.

I discovered this recently and, indeed, it makes a huge difference.
The caveat though is you are rather "disconnected" from things
going on around you, but that would depend on your own
personal working environment.
I'm on my own, in the middle of nowhere, using a large woodchipper,
who's exhaust fell off a while ago at the manifold

My vote goes to Peltor too.

I would guess for the purposes requested one of the PTT type ones would be ideal, everything is muffled as standard, but you can press a button when you want to hear the conversation clearly.

The closest you would get is the ones used for flight deck operations on some American carriers, they're essentially a 2-way headset, inside a regular "dumb" ear defenders, inside a very expensive noise cancelling headphone...

The outer "noise cancelling" is tuned to change the sound into a frequency range that the inner dumb ear defenders are most effective at blocking, so that they achieve their maximum SNR over the widest possible range of frequencies.

If anyone is interested why this is...

Noise cancelling works by sending an equivalent "negative" sound wave so the two destructively interfere.

But it can't do it instantly, so they're tuned to send the negative wave close enough together with the original sound that it will cancel out before the pressure wave before it reaches your Aural nerves.

That means that whilst you're not hearing the loud sound, the sensitive structures inside the ear are exposed to even higher levels of sound power potentially magnifying the harm.

Hence why the fancy US Navy ones have an internal ear defender to protect the user from the noise cancelling.

I’ve got some Racalacoustics ear muffs with active noise cancelling inside, apparently rated for heavy calibre machine gun use. They nail everything!!

The Sweeds or Norwegians did a big trial and came to a mixed result, will try and find link, it is not the results you expect

thanks for all the feedback , I will have to study some more . few years back I had electronic head set , but found great you could hear the trap click which was an advantage , but also everyones comments/remarks which were silly , especially when the guys at the back were making ridiculous comments , lets face it its called clay shooting , not clay missing ...yet you get stupid remarks like watch this show off ! now I go into stand ,head down, quiet , set myself up , shoot to my best ability , open and empty. turn around , face down and quietly exit allowing next in , no drama s , no show boating ,I have nothing to prove or lose, and yet still people have the stupid attitude, I don t get it,most of the other guys say its envy , but these are adults who have been passsed to own firearms !! hence the need for some total silence so I can do my thing , as for safety its only in the cage I want it quiet , at all other times , banter/bully away it makes no differance then at all quite happy to chat and socialise away from the stand and onto the next one.

it might be I go for peltor or similar and use plugs as well , turning the earphhones on full out of the stand.

I had those too but for the motorbike. Comfortable and not needing to remove them just to talk to people. I can't remember who did mine but they also did shooting ones as well as for many other industries including musicians. I had to go to Boots for my ear moulds doing and they were sent of to make the ear defenders and in my case with speakers too for intercoms.
