are they converted propane cylinders? if so how do you fill them from the compressor

Yeah 2x 47kg propane, basically 8mm pig tails connected through 2x T-pieces onto the airline running to both compressor and regulator, nothing complicated at all.

Keeping the original valve on each tank, it would be restrictive if you only had the one but both tanks combined, especially with compressor tank you have very good flow into the regulator.

The system is around 240 litre total, (the compressor tank is about 50 litre) compressor pump is sherry of london cast iron twin with a brook compton motor giving about 12cfm. Despite being about 20 years old (i believe) the compressor has been hardly used.

Nothing at the mo, i will be tapping a 1/4" bsp hole in the bottom of both soon however, i need to find a fitting that is narrow enough to fit under the tank and come out to a drain cock (or simply a PCL fitting that i can push a nozzle into to drain) The bottom plate of the tanks is thick enough to safely accept the thread, especially with some strong adhesive, something i've done before.

Simply having a 1/4" bsp plug in each would mean i would have to take the tanks off the stand anyway to drain them. (and i'd be more likely to accidently create a pneumatically propelled 1/4bsp bullet)

I've moved one of the tanks upside down after a months light use to drain the moisture and i was suprised how little came out actually, a teaspoon at most, i do have a substantial norgren moisture trap between the compressor and the tanks, mabye it's doing a better job than i had imagined.
It's an old one made of heavy cast alloy so with adiabatic cooling it's obviously getting quite cold even whilst the compressor air is warm and thus doing a good job.

I think placing the tanks upside down is a bad idea because rust will eventually form inside and all the cack will run down the inside to the outlet and into your regulator.
Keep the standard valves at the top.

screw a brass elbow in with a compression fitting on other end to an 8mm nylon pipe on to a ball valve

Have you thought of a dip tube type affair through the top, doing away with the t-piece and replacing them with a four way,or female cross,http://www.indanc.com/malleable_iron_pipe_fittings_105.php then get a reducer and drop some 8mm pipe down through the fitting to the base of the bottle, then all you need is a tap on the top,air pressure will force the water out.

OK, so second attempt to upload images of the garage. Still go to get some of the inside done and really really wished that I'd taken photos as it was built.





It's not as big as I really wanted to go but had to do some negotiations with the neighbours and the Missus - it is her house after all. It is 6m x 3.5m internal and warm as toast.

4" x 2" frame with 1/2" shuttering ply inside and out and fully insulated. Then clad with 19mm ship-lap boards. Roof is clad in 1/2" ply then breathable felt under the fake slates.

Thanks for the compliment. The overhang - well that was part of the negotiations with the Missus. She wants a timber deck area out the back of the garage so I thought that I might as well continue the roof by 1.5m and give myself a covered BBQ cooking area

Very nice indeed Scamp. I've just been getting inspired by M@att's garage build but yours is very similar to my latest plan for a(nother) shed. I've got a good sized w/s but the walls are coming in again (figuratively speaking ) and I want to move out some of the stuff that isn't used all the time and have a clean dry area for working on certain obnoxious smelling things

The one I want will only be slightly smaller than yours and being impatient I've been looking at buying one 'off the peg' - and getting depressed.
I have this eternal conflict of wanting to make that sort of thing myself as I love building with timber and have most (probably all) of the tools I'd need but having a lot of studio work I should be doing.

Can I ask what the approximate cost of the timber and cladding was? Insulation isn't strictly necessary as I probably won't be working in it for long periods but I may put some foil bubble-wrap behind any internal cladding..if I decide I need cladding..but only 'cos I've got several huge rolls of it

How did you do the base? Do the paving slabs go under it or did you pour a concrete base?

Btw - if you haven't already got a bbq I can highly recommend fire-pits! Great for cooking on in a sociable way as you can all sit round it and poke your own bits of meat (and have a few taties in the embers). Then when the cooking's done, whip off the grill, pile on the logs and sit around the fire toasting marshmallows. Lovely

Thanks for the positive comments there Ratty. I'm sorry but I didn't keep a track of the cost of any of the materials, it was simply case of 'I need so I buy'
Just kept asking the bank (The Missus) if I could spend what I needed. But I do seem to think that she didn't complain because it has still worked out cheaper than an off the peg item of lesser quality. As for the base, well - it is a little over engineered. I set all the shuttering with the intention of having a 6" shoe all the way round the outside edge and then the concrete being 4" thick for the main pad. I underestimated for the hardcore and because I had bodies and mixers arranged had to just go for it so ended up having to do multiple runs to B&Q for extra ballast. I think we worked out that there was a total of 13 tonne of hardcore, ballast and cement in it.

You could build a brick and block garage on it without any worries

No worries, I'm just being lazy I should work out what I would need and get some prices. Good to know that you reckon it worked out cheaper (not counting labour of course ) I did wonder about that as shed manufacturers buy timber in such huge quantities it seemed likely that there wouldn't be much saving doing it yourself. I've been looking at a 10' x 16' one made with tannalised wood and which looks fairly well made, costing £1400 (19mm cladding but just noticed they don't specify frame size) then of course the base would be extra. I'd have to extend the doors too as I want to make it higher with a brick or block plinth so I'm very tempted to start from scratch and make it just how I want it. Thanks for the inspiration, I'd better get the drawing book out
