Can you ever have enough tools?

mostly got what I use , does nt stop me needing something else , like the cheap clutch alignment tool , what a piece of carp , went back to using the bar with various shims that I have had since teen years . I do keep an eye on old boxes at auctions but mostly thats all naggered stuff . other than that the odd size socket .

I used to use a socket wrapped in tape and put it on a 12 " extension , never ever had a problem doing that ,
MINI oil seal , simply cut a plastic drink cup up , cut lip off and slip it over the shaft then slide the cover with seal inn place in seconds & with draw the cups remains ,

Motor vehicle specialist tools bore me but regular hand tools and metrology gear is right on target for me, 4 sine tables is never enough when theres other sizes you don't yet own.

It's akin to asking a stamp collector if they have enough stamps. The collection is never complete.

It's same with most hobbies or collections. It doesn't need to make sense to anyone else. It merely has to make you happy. If collecting tools is still doing that, crack on old chap.

I got one of those because I've always used a socket with some tape on it and a long extension to see parallelism easy, and went back to using the socket with tape on it after the first experience.

Can you have too many tools? yes, and I'm way past that point, so nothing for it but to just keep on getting more when I need them.
I'm lucky in that my lad is going into design engineering and working half of his uni course as a apprenticeship in metrology at a big auto foundary, so he takes my side in the inevitable "do you need more tools" discussions over dinner with my wife/daughter, because he knows when I kick the bucket he'll get the pick of it all. He deals with the rep for the company that made my portable cmm, but he refuses to take it in and get it calibrated as a favour in lunch hours, so thats a black mark against him.

I think once you've got a good set of mechanics tools, plus pullers and enough for a competent garage and power tools that's pretty damn good, once you get a lathe and milling machine the shopping starts all over again.

There's measuring stuff too.

I got a lot of tools.. (too many)

I don't often buy tools now - only to replace losses and breakages.

Depends on the set up, four locations within the yard all need there own toolkits and one complete set for mobile use. Still end up backwards and forwards to one box or another.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that in recent years I've either inherited or been given far too many tools such that I've been giving them away where I can and scrapping a lot. Today, I've been sorting through another load and there is just too much of it that it has become a chore and not a pleasure. Last week I was asked to help clear another load of tools for a friend who is in poor health and having to get out of his workshop. He's not able to help and his request was to take anything that I want ,sell what can be sold and not worry about scrapping anything. If only I had the enthuisiasm to make a start. Unfortunately, it's not only tools but all of the other associated gear that you find in a workshop such as fixings, parts oil etc. I'm even getting 'no' from people that I've tried to give things to. Breaks your heart but I don't want to be knee deep in all of this - rather have the space.

working on older cars as an hobby i rarely need anything now, but always worth browsing marketplace/ ebay for top quality used stuff. if the price is ok (i don't do cheeky bids, best price m8 etc) seem to be having a good run on proper usa visegrips at the moment can never have enough
