I go through the girlfriend thing every so often, i was a real bu**er after the first one dumped me, weirdest thing is i was godfather too her baby sister who sadly passed at 43. I had and still have contact with that family, over 50 years worth, back on subject. I used too ride with a cycling club, yep i remember the corners i took too fast and also the ones that were really enjoyable, we all get these days, it's making the most of the ones where it doesn't pray on your mind !

absolutly , always interesting to go through things , it may help others on here and or make people see the other side of a situation , that was nt obvious.

These thoughts, they’re just memories of things, places, situations, nothing dramatic or evil. It’s surprising how fast the mind can flit through a sequence of events, that would take hours to relate, or write down.

I remember one of my earliest trips working offshore. Flew from Singapore to northern Sumatra, joined a ship, the Western Horizon, then sailed to Phuket. Two days tied up there, two nights out in the bars, bars I knew very well as I’d lived there for a year in an earlier life.

Then we sailed to Burma, worked offshore there for 14 weeks, then we sailed up to Yangon for crew change. A 2 day layover in Bangkok, then on to the Philippines. 2 days in Manila, then I took the 4am bus to some little village out in the bunghole of nowhere. I was supposed to meet a ‘girlfriend’ there. But after 12 hours on the bus I arrived and discovered she wasn’t there……

And the story goes on. But the other night something triggered that memory and my mind whipped through the whole tale in just a few seconds, from start to end, and every detail along the way, the speed of light.

Maybe it’s the drugs I’m taking for the MND, anxiety and depression, but some days my brain works in mysterious ways, it’s wonders to perform.

When I was in my early 20s Id been at sea for 6 months or so. Came home and went out with the boys on the town. Bumped into a girl I knew, we were chatting and she asked where Id been, as shed not seen me about for a while, so I told her. Anyway she thought I was bull****ing, and I wasnt an officer in the Navy, pull the other one. 20 Years later her son is in my daughter’s class at Boarding school. We got chatting one day, and she remembered the earlier conversation. She apologised for not believing me as she was so used to hearing bull. Sometimes what we think is normal is unbelievable to folk who live in their own little world.

Actually not a bad idea. Would it still be liable for inheritance tax if the policy was in their name/s ?

I was thinking more of the clearing up of all the detritus of a life. Sunday morning with a 71/2 tonner and a JCB job done. Just have a ceremony around the nearest layby and down to the pub.

I rarely even mention any of my adventures when I see old friends, which is rare anyway. Many years ago I tried to answer people when they’d ask where I’d been, but after a minute or two their eyes would glaze over and conversation would turn to who had won the pools match last week etc.

I found that, then I realised the world is full of boolchitters and most of the time my own genuine tales would come across as makey-uppey, so I tended to not talk about things I'd seen or done.
In retrospect I seem to have packed a large amount of stuff into the second and third decades of my life.

Don't we all live in our own little world? As long as we are happy with the choices we made at the time ,good or bad, who's to care?
Strangely enough I got a letter today ( no BS ) from an Aussie woman I worked with 50 years ago ,we get one every year, who we have nicked named the " over achievers" and when we reply we sign ourselves the "under achievers" who gives a toss . Very few are really interested in someones past history except for an initial" WoW." except when there may be a real connection with the experience or subject.

Wise words indeed. I remember that some single event, or line, triggered my urge to make the most of life, rather than sit back and vegetate for 60 years. I can’t remember exactly what it was, but something very simple.

Another memory issue with age. I went to put the 14" pry bar that I got the other week, when I thought: "That's cute. Getting one", somewhere safe...

I worked with a fitter who was universally known as "Bob the bullsh***er", apparently he owned land worth millions around the world, NASA had asked for his advice on the space program etc. we would put this on the workshop monitor when he was on shift

Went to the funeral on Friday of a pal of mine, we were not close friends but I had him pegged as a decent bloke, turns out a good number of people also had him down as a decent guy, it was standing room only in the (rather large) church:



It wasn't exactly full military honours but it was very, very close, piper led the coffin into church and an honour guard every time it was moved. Very sad and very moving. His close family all fell apart. He had retired and was messing about in the garage, a large two lift place with everything you would need to service and maintain vehicles, it was a big hobby to him. Anyhow he set off home and called in to the pub to see someone, had a heart attack at the bar and that was that. You just never know.

If I reminisce I only remember the bad bits and have to shake my head or swear to clear that thought.

This is human nature, sadly. We remember the times we were hurt and the failures more easily than the times we were happy and the successes. It's an evolutionary defence mechanism which hard wires us to be vigilant against threats like wild animals by putting danger/fear first in our memories. Not very helpful in the modern world when we are no longer prey and thus what you likely dwell on is broken relationships and personal loss rather than 'Remember when that sabre toothed tiger chased me? I won't let that happen again'.

It takes 3 nice things to balance out one unpleasant experience apparently. We are just hard wired to focus on the bad stuff. I'm definitely a glass half empty person even though I try not to be. I also find myself less resilient, mental health wise, as I get older. Much harder to pull myself together and stop worrying than it used to be.
