Most people (me included) left boc years ago because of the high (and constantly escalating) rental costs. 6% off a lot might still leave a lot, for someone on low usage it was a big spend. I do miss it though...

Reminded me, I need to return my BOC argoshield bottle. I’ve sold the welder and the bottle is sitting there, still half full after 4 years paying rent on it…

ETA: ten minute after posting this I had an email telling me the rental price is staying the same next year, but gas prices are going up. I’m still taking the bottle back though.

the closer of my local boc place literally cut me off any gas from them again as i paid in cash over the counter when i collected a new bottle

the other place was canal rd and i was refused to pay cash over the counter as it had to be prepaid before collection from it

my next nearest place is leeds or its pay for delivery

I had Pure Argon, Argomix, Oxygen and Acetylene from BOC, was costing me an (ever increasing) fortune in annual rent. I still have the same gases now from other suppliers, but I don't pay rent on the cylinders. I'm quite surprised BOC have any 'low usage' customers remaining that they can offer a paltry discount to.

Controversial opinion, I honestly don't think that the BOC rental fees are so bad...

For what I'm paying annually on 3 W's and an L, I could just pay the deposit on a single Hobbyweld cylinder that holds ⅓ the gas.

I am using 1-2 full 11.4m³ cylinders a year of each though.

BOC are also a lot closer than my nearest Hobbyweld dealer (that will actually deal with you, as a disproportionate chunk of their "network" around me doesn't seem to know they deal in gas at all, or want to help).

It's the cylinder collection cost of nearly twenty five quid that is unjustifiable to me, plus the Hobbyweld Ultra bottles have decent built in regulators that don't stick out and quick release fittings. Was borderline for our costings when we worked them out per year but the huge advantage is being able to have spare bottles ready to swap over and we should get the deposits back at some stage.

Only cylinders I have with BOC now are a small oa portapac set up and the large acetylene, the rest are rent free with Adams gas. Not sure why they are offering me discounts and freebies

I just re-did my maths from when I decided to start renting, and nothing has changed, Hobbyweld's high fill costs just kills rent free for me.

I don't think I'm a particularly heavy user of gas, with 4 cylinders per year, but because of the small volume and very high fill charges for Hobbyweld cylinders I'd end up £1080 worse off not renting.

Even adding in the £25 collection charge BOC is £9 cheaper for just shy of three times more gas.

For me using two size W cylinders of Argoshield a year, that's six Hobbyweld Ultra's, so even accounting for cylinder rent I'd be £346 worse off on rent free bottles.


A £45 Cylinder of Oxygen becomes three £92.60 ultras... So I'd be £39.89 worse off on rent free.


Hobbyweld has not been able to even supply Acetylene for yonks now... But if I somehow had a cylinder to exchange, I would need nine fills of their 0.84m³ cylinders at £138 each to replace the single £241 fill of my Size L cylinder... £691 worse off rent free.



The only question is could Energas, Air Liquide, or Gas Direct cut me a better rental deal than BOC.

J&R Gasses (Nelson) used to do rent free size W and H sized cylinders with decent fill prices, but their ability to supply became really patchy during and after the COVID lockdowns.

I took the cylinder volumes from their stockists website, so they're missing a trick there by telling people they get even less for their money than they do.

Yeah, that's where a rental charge will get you...

The tipping point where rental becomes cheaper with the MIG gas is if you use more than Hobbyweld 3 bottles per machine per year.

Again the suppliers I've looked at aren't even listing refilling ultras as an option, let alone giving a price, only the 0.8m³...

so bottle plus collection charge is about the same as an adams gas refill for a 50l bottle, what's the rental on a w cylinder nowadays ?
