7 million in the public sector... all creating zero wealth & a drain on those of us who do.... out of a total of 29 mill working?...1 in 3 "employed by the state", ..
So NHS, fixing roads, teaching children, looking after old people, looking after those who have mental health/no learning ability, the fire service, the police... the list goes on and on.....
One big drain eh? get rid of them eh? drain on society eh?

no, but dont pretend they are anything that they are not... an expense, just like gas, electric, food...not "new jobs created by the government to boost the ecconomy"
they are "non productive" in terms of the economy... ie they produce nothing you can sell to others.
The program did make the distinction that out of the 7 million only 2million were front line services and they also included people doing those specific jobs in the private sector as well.
you know I very very rarely get personal in these kind of things, but do try to get a grip on reality.... how about the millions of "jobs for the boys"... chief interdepartmental liason assistant to the depudy director of external equality control and assessors chief **** wipe kind of people & yes they do exist in the thousands...

I agree they are there, but in the whole scale of what is delivered they are a tiny percentage. The wide sweeping statements that are being made are blasting more good folks than bad.
But it did clearly state on that programme last night that out of 7 million employed in the public sector less than 2 million were front line. I don't know where they find the statistics from but surely they couldn't or wouldn't of got it so wrong?? They did go on to say that of figure of 2 million wasn't accurate because some of that figure included teachers and nurses who were employed in private schools and hospitals, so its actually less than 2 million front line.
Cut your 4 hour lunch break then Mark - on here everyday from around 12.30 onwards - then you might be able to catch up!well they can join me, I've got work for three of me and its getting worse
Swiss Tony! I'm going to see your graph, which looks terrible, but is a nonsense, and raise it with this one:-

And this one:-

Percent of GDP at the side, years at the bottom. While Swiss Tony's numbers look bad they take no account of inflation or relative monetary values. That graph is a statistical sham.
The same goes for channel 4's documentary too (they're a TV company - journalists - they don't care about the truth, they want headlines, they want us to watch, and they want us to believe what they say, but mostly they want to thrill us and freak us out, then get advertisers to pay them lots of money), and the pension debt - it's not actual debt, it's future debt. And don't blame Brown for that - it's the pensions that people have been promised since WW2 - people like (some of your) your parents, and a few of the older folk on this forum.
So for all of you who think this country is in a worse state than ever before, have a good look at those graphs, then make up your mind.
They take no account of inflation!
If you watch the Channel 4 programme one of the first things it explains is inflation, or actually the devaluing of your pound, caused by successive governments printing more and more money. It makes your savings and pensions worth less and it encourages more borrowing of money.
