This morning it came to a head as her poxy kittens sprayed some of my stuff so off to the timber merchants…sorted

I bought 25 litres of 'genuine coal tar creosote, for professional use only' from ebay just a few weeks ago. The smell dissipates quite quickly and it doesn't burn the skin if you get a splash. It was very thick & oily and certainly repels water from the gates I treated with it but it's not the same stuff I remember from my youth.

If odd, you mean to wide/tall pack the frame out, buy a solid fire door, do what you want with it after that.
