Electric water heaters

So I’m taking on a new unit in the coming months one of things to tackle on the list is the water heater for the bathroom and kitchen sinks (both are basically back to back ) this is what is currently fitted leaky and I can’t imagine it’s the most efficient unit.

I’ve been looking at units like this

I’ll probably need to put a new electric feed to it and reroute some pipework but doesn’t look too taxing. Has anyone got any better suggestions?

My other solution is to fit an electric hot water tap which is what my current unit has this works really well I’m not sure if you can get these for a bathroom?

I don’t need a lot of hot water just nice to have to wash hands and plates etc I’m hoping to split this in the new unit currently I use the kitchen sink for everything and it’s a bit of a mess!

When I modernised my home 36 years or so ago I fitted Redring over the sink 2kw heaters on the kitchen , bathroom & toilet sinks , simply turn it on and you get a fine spray of hot water within 10 seconds.
Money was exceedingly tight so only needing cold water to the fittings was ideal for me .

We have one of these for our hot water at home, there was nowhere to put a cylinder in so this ended up being installed.
It provides enough hot water for 3 sinks and recovers quite quickly from use.

Fitted a couple of these at our sailing club as the toilet/ washrooms were to far from the hot water cylinder. They work well and produce heat where it is needed, not miles away. The one that gets the most use packed up after around 4 or 5 years due to an internal leak, I replaced it with the same. I have also had to replace one of the external expansion vessels but they aren't expensive.

Yes our first one started leaking after 5 years too. The new one is probably about 2 years old now and still good!

Thanks for the suggestion. Looks very similar to what is there I’d have thought? So easier to replace as i wouldn’t need a new feed only a slight change to connections

My only concern with ones with an internal tank is if I’d need to remember to turn it off at night/weekends so it’s not constantly trying to maintain temperature. My current unit neighbours have one that’s under the sink and they found they save around £20-30 a month by switching off at night.

plenty of emersion heater timers at under 20 quid . digital or mechanical

I haven't read every word of this but for goodness sake, get one with a stainless steel tank!

I got through two Ariston under sink heaters within probably 7 or 8 years because the tanks rust out. I've now fitted a 15 litre Hyco and so far so good.

I tried this and monitored energy consumption only to find a neglible saving of a few pence a day (about a pound a week).

They're pretty well insulated and efficient these days.

Yes but electricity is 100% efficient for 1kw of power you get 1kw of heat, you can't say the same of gas.

If you don’t have gas to the building it’s also a moot point. While it may be true it doesn’t really have any relevance in this case…

At my Dad's old house in Portugal we have a wall mounted gas water heater. Very similar to the electric ones. Runs off a Propane cylinder. Mind you I suspect Propane not cheap here.

Doubt it would be any cheaper than electric ( probably dearer if anything) and then you’ve got the hassle of keeping gas cylinders, swapping them, rent of cylinders…

Works well in Portugal but I know in the UK the price of Propane tends to vary greatly depending on supplier.
