12v fan temperature switch.

I have a split charge/solar charging setup in my pickup, I have a fan in the box to provide cooling. Right now is is controlled by a simple rocker switch, but I am wanting to wiring in a temperature controled switch instead as I often forget to turn the fan on or off.

Would this below be suitable?

If it's just a temperature controlled on/off switch, then the 5A bit is the current rating of the contacts. Would that be enough for the fan motor you have?

it is only a little 12v fan I am sure 5A is plenty

I've had good results using "Klixon" switches to control elec radiator fans etc.
They are standard for temperature control inside microwaves / ovens / washine machines...

Pick normally open or normally closed, various temperature settings are available, they are rated 16A @ 250Vac - add a relay if needed to cope with higher currents

Normally closed (NC) means it's "on" until the condition (set temp) is reached. I.e the contacts are closed making the circuit.

So in that case I need a NO one so that when it reaches say 50C it closes and makes the circuit.

You can get little temperature controlled pwm circuit boards for not a lot of money that will ramp up a fan the hotter it get. Might be a more elegant solution?

5 amps at 12 volts is 60 watts. There is no way your fan will have anything like that. The big fans they used to use in truck cabs were no more than twenty.

not sure the little fan is speed controlled though. its a fan i robbed from a tread mill i think!

If it's DC and the board you use has the power capabilities, should be fine. Though a tread mill sounds a lot bigger than the capacity of the widgets I've used.

i did look at those but they sounded complicated with the programing ect
the fan is really small TBH only about 2" square with the housing

Don't think the one I used had no programming, just power in, fan wire out and a thermocouple to put where you want measure temperature. There may have been dipswitches to alter the target temperature control point but not hard. The best thing is that most of the time the fan just idles and only really ramps up when the kit us working hard.

Edit, sorry, I hadn't read that you'd already bought something. May as well stick with what you've got coming

I tried one that had DIP switches so you could adjust the trigger temperature several degrees by altering the switch settings.
The Klixon type I normally use are easy to use and a lot more robust.

The adjustable ones sounded a good idea but I picked the wrong temperature range so it always came on too soon. It also needed a 12V feed and an earth connection for the electronics which isn't needed for the Klixon type.

Ah right. A fan switch like that shouldn't need to be complex of course.

the digittal type are like the chiller and freezer controllers we have at work. But less paremeters to program.
The ebay one you can set things like on and off temps and fan speeds

I just receieved my switch, smaller than I imagined. Will it be ok screwed down to wood in the enclosure.
