Range rover Evoque key not working after changing battery

Ok helping a mate at work he had a key that had not worked for a while

I've replaced the case as was bad condition and put in a new cr2032 battery

But does nothing not surprising been looking on the net but I know landrovers are a bit of a thing for a few on here

Any one know the sequence to reconnect the key to the car ?

Is the wee transponder thingy still there? Friends wife change their case, threw the old one out with the transponder still in it !

What part does not work us my first question?

Usually two parts for a key depending on year, generally.

Central locking/alarm remote control, this will be a circuit board. If this is broken or battery dead, the car will usually still start after manual unlocking.

The immobiliser disarming chip. A small plastic rectangle that is often well hidden in the key casing. You dont want to loose this as its the part that is coded to the cars ECU and often needs dealer tools to replace.

If you have thrown the old case away, recover it from your bin before it is taken to landfill!


As an example my Mazda key is two parts, the alarm and central locking is the peice with buttons. The left part with the key is all thats needed to manually unlock and drive.

That’s identical to my daughters, and when we bought the car the dealer got her a brand new key. We still have the old one and were wondering how to either repair it, or get a replacement. If we unlock the car with the key, the alarm goes off. The push button bit has either failed, or the battery is toast. It was very intermittent when we first looked at the car.

The sort of dealer we bought it from would never have bought a new key, unless he got it cheap, or the original was totally fubar.

I have intermittent issues with the remote. On the right one with buttons, if you pry the case apart, it is easy to replace the battery. However I find the pcb contact likely corroded and making poor contact with the contact clip. I keep intending to polish it or put a blob of solder, should be very easy.

I dont suppose you have the manual as mine did not come with one? If so I'd like to see pages about the fob/alarm and what the lower buttons are intended for.
Mazda 6's seem known for intermittent alarm soundings which is possibly helped by the lower right button after locking.

Also the push button is just a carbon blob between the pcb contacts on the grey rubber part, easily removed and may need a clean.

Assume its a 5 button remote key, that doesn't have to be plugged into dash or actually need a key in the ignition? You'll need a locksmith / dealer software to reprogram it to the car. Had to get one done this week after a washing machine encounter, fortunately key cover on insurance picked up the invoice.

Evoque key won't need reprogramming after a battery/case swap.
Sounds like the key was not working before and is still not working now?
Most key places have a tester to see if the key is actually working or not.

Its an old style key, needs to be in ignition lock to fire up.
Nope, the immobiliser part is waterproof. The alarm/central locking remote part might not survive but I believe those are much easier to reprogram with 3rd party tools.

I have one of those keys with no car for it to go to, and you can re-pair it using forscan. The blade is swappable also, Yours if you want it for cost of postage.

Our Suzuki wouldn't work with a brand new battery ,I had to discharge it slightly, since then it has worked fine.

One of the Rovers I had mentioned pressing and holding both buttons for a few seconds to discharge it before fitting a new battery.

Is there a sticker still attached from the packaging? Had that recently in a remote control.

Could be that the new battery is out of date?...been there...done that!

Batteries were new in packet...luckily I tested one and sure enough it was duff!

ok an bit of an up date on this after a bit of time and a trip to local timpsons i have found the remote is lightly fubared

there is corrosion in the battery terminals and a slight bit over the board

this was pointed out after taking to timpsons and they tested it for rf out put and there was nothing so i cliped it apart and there it was ive cleaned it up but im guessing the damage is done when it leaked but will give it a try but not hoping for much

fair dos to them said bring it in and did not even charge for the test

Try contact cleaner, the spray stuff, I've had good results with it.
