In the unlikely event some daft copper manages to actually kill one of these animals by running it over, does the carcass qualify as "roadkiill"?

If it does, my understanding is the instigator is not allowed to claim it. Could someone else make a valid legal claim for the unfortunate yet tasty beast?

News channels are not showing the full video, but I feel everyone needs to see, as it was pure unnessasary cruelty.

Hope he gets locked up for it and taught a proper lesson. More likely he will be rewarded. At the least he should be done for speeding as he appears to be using excessive speed without blue lights and the rules state they can only use speed with lights.

I'd suggest they could have got a vet with a tranquiliser, would have been a better option - given they are said to have been following it for a reasonable amount of time.

Surprised it wasn't tasered and beaten with night sticks, to be honest.
A wee cow like that is easily controlled by just one person who has a clue, there was absolutely no need for that show of barbarity.

The c**t driving the Police vehicle should be strung up preferably, and fired with no pension as a minimum. No need for that at all, absolutely shameful.

I disagree, he maybe a very good police officer, that should come out in the internal questions asked to him after the event, I think his perception of the seriousness of the event was way out of proportion, but to remove his career and aspirations from him because of a single event would be very unfair.
None of us are perfect and we all make mistakes, in this case he clearly did, I would be very surprised if his intentions were to deliberately cause harm to an innocent animal, he did what he thought was right because he didn’t know what the feck was right …..

And there in lies the problem.
Training for this type of event is the answer.

I watched that clip twice.

That was the smallest least aggressive cow I have ever seen.

They left it - in pain - still alive under the front of truck.

If this standard Police procedure - it needs reviewing and changing.

The animal was not despatched - it was tortured!

I don't approve in the slightest. I know the correct way to handle cattle and I know it's harmless through experience. The same as many people commenting on this thread. I am however aware that a far greater majority of this country have absolutely not a clue about such things and the police where likely trying to make a decision based on a lack of knowledge or experience of the situation. I see No point in persecuting someone for trying to do the right thing. Even if it is severely misguided.

Loose cattle, sheep, horses, etc are an almost daily event around here.
Not to mention deer and boar, who see things such as fences as
something to be got through.
What is absolutely clear, from the video, is that no-one present had
the slightest clue as to how to handle the harmless no-risk situation.
At the very least it should red flag an urgent need for training for the
police respondants at the scene. But, it also demonstrates to me just
how clueless, and detached from nature, the general public have
become.
I really feel for the calf and can only imagine how frightened and
confused it must have been.
Also, all this talk of marksmen, etc.... Too much Hollywood. Why
does the default response, to almost anything these days, have to be
to kill ?

We got in an incident today with bullocks. A tent pegging team were practicing on a field used previously for an event, I'm not sure if the farmer had given permission for to them this time as the gate to adjoining field was open with bullocks in, around 30+, and sure enough they came into the bottom field where they were.
My wife and I were walking the dog and seeing them enter the bottom field went through the style into the top field now vacant of bullocks. My wife is really afraid of cows to the point of being hysterical if one comes near her. Anyway walk was going well and from the higher ground got a good view below with the tent pegging and bullocks which kept coming up to where they were practicing. Coming down the field to the gate I couldn’t believe that they were chasing the cows off the field with cars, horns blasting, straight towards us. I turned us towards the style we’d come through but it was over 100 meters away and we were a lot closer to the gate. I told my wife to walk fast straight to the style whilst I hobbled along with my knackered knee holding the dog. The bullocks soon caught us up and now a few meters behind us so I turned and shouted “whoa” at the leaders of which there was around 7 in a row with the rest tight behind them. The dog thought it was great and tried licking one that caused it to jump back creating excitement in the herd and little charge forward but another “whoa” stopped them again. This was repeated numerous times with them just a few meters behind continuously jostling with each other until I reached the style and my panicked wife waiting on the over side.
Walking down the lower field to get back home another dog walker waiting at another style couldn’t believe what she’d seen first from the group tent pegging chasing the bullocks to me getting surrounded by them expecting the worse had started to call 999 until she’d seen me come through the style.

You would have thought the tent peggers would have closed the gate with the bullocks now in the top field but didn’t. The bullocks having spent a while at the style I’d exited through turned back around, though the gate and into the lower field straight towards the tent peters again. We were at the opposite end by then and ready to exit the field whilst the bullocks charged towards the tent peggers.

It did make my butt hole twitch with so many over excited bullocks after been chased by cars, being so close to me but I just thought get the wife a safe distance away, keep walking and make sure the dog is under control.
One young cow on its own should have been easily contained by the police and definitely no need to hit it so hard with a truck.

I grew up handling stirks like that. I guess it was out of control (stirks do that, quite often one gets ornery excited and it'll do whatever the heck it wants, completely unpredictable until they've blown off some energy)
BUT there was no call to run the poor thing over, absolute moron. I hope he gets taught properly what to do next time.

As for drugging it - do we now need Police to do some vet training to know how much drug to administer?

From the story I heard, they had tried to get a vet, but were unable - maybe couldn't afford the fees? So someone did the best they could.

If the fences around the field it was in were suitable and in good order, maybe this wouldn't have happened?

My sister and I are the first ones from both sides of the family to follow the hard work of farming. Too much like hard work. And watching, as kids, an animal this sort of size knock my uncle down, badly breaking his leg. No thanks.

I don't think you need training on every species but perhaps a short stint (for everyone not just the police) on a farm would help people's common sense in these regards. I think it was Clarkson saying that rather than national service people should do a stint on a farm. You certainly learn (or at least appreciate) common sense then.

Mind you I remember my soon to be mother in law who has been a farmer all her life failing to herd the sheep through a gate with their buggy and getting angrier and angrier hurtling about and chasing them down. After a few failed attempts I yelled at her to urinate off and I'll deal with them. Gave the sheep a few minutes on their own and then walking calmly and quietly herded them through the gates first attempt. It's not so much training as learning to read the situation and animals behaviour and being calm and collected.

We don't know what happened in the lead up to that clip but in my opinion the calf didn't look panicked or manic, rather just curious because someone was running away from it. Perhaps the copper read the situation correctly, perhaps he didn't. Just getting onlookers away and calmly trying to contain it as well would have likely worked.

My thoughts were not so much towards animal specific training, but more to do with
being taught to assess and provide a calm and measured response to out of the ordinary
situations generally.
The information that stated they had been chasing it for "hours", already tells a story in itself.
One can only wonder that perhaps this incident came about as a result of their incompetence
from the beginning.
