Hi forum members
I recently bought my first welder, a Fragram 160 Amp inverter welder. I then managed to weld one side of the hinge on to the gate and then for some reason it wouldn't work on the other side. I then returned the machine in case it was a factory defect. I then bought another welding machine also 160 Amp but a different make to avoid the service trouble I experienced with Fragram. I am now not able to get a spark with my new welding machine unless I connect the earth very close to the electrode holder. On a small bullet hinge you can imagine how close that is. The problem is the electrode gets so hot that the electrode virtually melts away and burns the plastic around the clamp. It's a wrought iron gate so I would expect it to be a very good conductor of electricity. I am trying to complete the job but can't seem to get a spark when I place the earth on another part of the gate This setup worked the very first time. I have made sure that everything is connected correctly, the electrode clamp holder on the positive and earth on the negative terminal but no luck. I have even tried different rods but to no avail. It would seem the electrode is not being positively charged. Please help.
