is the compressor running? it should start up 30 sec or so after tuning it on... it'll sound a bit like a fridge compressor starting up (it is a fridge compressor)
you could take the cover off and see if the compressor is running if you're not sure, see if you can feel it 'humm' as it runs
if it's running and not working it'll need gas.... but there's no real way to add it, it's basically junk

The humidistat normaly switches the compressor in on older machines, but it also turns the fan on. Having said that, the power to the compressor from the humidistat normally goes via a circuit board that doesn't enable the compressor if temperature is below about 5 degC, and the circuit board also cycles the compressor whilst the humidistat is sending demand to the compressor, to allow the periodic thawing of the condensing coils. On newer machines, the mechanisms may be different e.g. a humidity sensor, and associated circuitry, rather than a humidistat, as such, but performing similar functions.
It may be a sticky switch, or a dry joint somewhere. Does turning the humidity control to a drier setting cause the compressor to start? Humidistats normally do have some hysteresis, by design. If the humidity level is rising, a tap to the unit sometimes overcomes this, and any mechanical stiction, and trips it into closing the contacts.

Mine had 4 dropper resistors on the control board which were showing their age. One had cracked. Worth checking

cheak the drawer normaly there is a micro switch that shuts the unit off what the water is full and possably a 2nd one to tell the drawer is in place and tapping the mechine will get them working if there sticking
So. A few points to answer the queries above.
1. Circuit board 'looks' good on both sides. I know thats not definitive but I cant see blown components or obvious dry joints.
2. It appears that the compressor will run if I turn it on at the plug. If I turn it off either by removing the drain drawer or turning the humidistat down and then push the draw back in or turn up the humidistat, the fan starts but the compressor will not restart. Turning on and off at the plug will make it restart again.
3. I can feel the compressor relay click in all sitiatuons in point 2 its just the compressor wont restart off of the humidistat or drawer switch. Both of these are clearly working as if both are 'on' it will start off of the plug.
Any further thoughts? Seems like the compressor needs a surge from the plug directly!

just a guess is there a capactor on the motor terminals all tight ?
Looks more like another relay to my inexperienced eye but I didnt get a pic!
