Shipping container

Does anyone on here own a shipping container as a workshop, or do you know of one that has been well camoflaged so you wouldnt know it was a container to start with......Some pictures would be a big help, as i feel a project like this coming on but the big hurdle is the wife who thinks they are a "Monstrosity" so the camoflage bit is most important!!!!

Well for what it's worth, I spent 3 months working in one last year, and it was the worst thing ever!! Every bang of a hammer get's reflected off the walls to the point where you can't hear a damn thing when you've done!!

As for camoflage, well how about some green paint??!! Or maybe clad it in some shiplap timber??!!

You would need to insulate, line and ventilate it or it would condensate like hell, be like a fridge in winter and an oven in summer.

I know a chap who had six or eight containers arranged in a rectangle to form the walls of a workshop and storage. Roofed over the space in the middle to use as a the workshop area.

It can be done, but not in a bare container.

Not really secure either. A building firm used to keep all their tools such as stil saws, drills, generators and stuff in it when away on site. They could not get in through the doors but simply cut a big enough hole in the back with a cordless saw and got away with all the tools!!

Depends what your surroundings are though!

Same applies to anything if they really want your stuff ! A mate had his garage cleaned out after they broke through the wall with a sledge hammer !!

Dig a big hole and bury it. put some grass over the top and a ladder down into it.

Tricky to blend them in. There's one on the farm and it looks very much like a rusty old ugly shipping container. Even tall weeds can't disguise it.

If it's the wife that objects to the look there are other cheap ways of making a workshop. A friend bought one of those wooden ones from a crowd in Rugby. They look quite good, not much more than a shipping container, and should be much nicer to work in. Question is how you get enough leverage to be allowed such a thing.

I saw one at a house about 10miles from here that had been painted white to match the house, it looked pretty smart and blended in quite well

I saw one today as i was out and about on my Bike at a filling station, It was used as a toilet! but it was boarded down the entire length 20ft with 6"x3/4" rough sawn boards fittted vertically......Couldnt see the container till you looked round the back and that was the double door end! the other end had a door in the centre and the end panel was flush and not corrugated like a 40 footer so it had been halfed like a lot of others, and this end had a roof put over it about 8ft long and when we stood back and looked.......A man on a galloping horse could not tell a container was there! it's this type of camoflage i'm talking about! and I don't think it would be expensive either!!!!!

We've used ISO containers for a few jobs at work... typically they get used as mobile darkrooms for field radiography (on pipelines etc.) but we've done a couple of 'specials': one is 14' 6", divided into two rooms with one room lined with lead sheet, accessed from the other (control) room by a lead-lined sliding door. It's used for x-raying bits of helicopters by the Royal Navy.
The other was a 40 foot container that we supplied to a Russian company; it had a snow lobby, office, darkroom with 15 foot bench and automatic film processor, film viewing area, kitchen, crewroom with two bunks and a plant room containing cold water tank, diesel generator, water heater and air conditioners! Last seen at Rostov-on-Don; it probably houses five families now.

A mate needed to expand his workshop, I suggested using Fridge Containers he bought 4 40' fridge trailers (without the trailer bit) built some concrete pads to sit them on and bolted them together with coach bolts, then cut the sides out of them.

The outside was clad with the same stuff used to make fencing panels, just pinned on. They now look like a BIG shed, and you would never know from the outside what they used to be.

The biggest bonus is his new workshop is Cool in summer and Warm in winter.

A friend of mine put his in the ground and put his shed on top, the container is accessed from the shed through a trap door, he uses it for storage only though
