Abrasive expiry dates?

Just noticed this on a cut off wheel I bought on the bread Isle tonight.



I took a look at my other abrasive discs and none of them clearly state an expiry date.



The disc above does have v07/2025 marked on it. Do I take that as an expiry date?

Am I likely to murder myself if I have older discs in tool drawers? I am wearing my hard hat in bed tonight just incase.

I recall that there is organic material in the discs which can break down which, in turn, can cause the discs to shatter. The learned people on here concluded that you really shouldn't used them if they were well out of date. That said, I've got a batch that expired in 2022 and I'll probably bin them sometime next year.

Yes. Use by dates of grinding discs are usually marked on the metal ring in the centre.

I'm not suggesting you should use an expired disc but..

I'd guess the dates must take into account worst-case storage conditions, ie. Damp tin workshop that experiences temperature extremes?

Id be happier using a decent brand, correctly stored disc that was well past its use-by date than a cheap one that was well within date but had been left with the weight of the grinder resting on it in a damp shed for a few months..

I regularly have the same conversation about regulators. A decent brand regulator that is 15yrs old but has been treated well is (to my mind) better than a £14.99 cheap thing that is still within the 5yr date.
I've seen bottles get knocked over and decent regulators bend. The cheap chinese things snap clean off. I'll admit I've never actually seen either type fail in normal use regardless of date though.
I've got a few bottles with integrated regulators and not even noticed a date on those. Maybe the suppliers have a record of them and they will contact me at the 5yr mark and offer me a free swap...

I've just finished using a batch of slitting discs that expired in 2004, no issues.

Personally I completely ignore it and its a risk that i'm willing to take, but i'm working on my own.

If I was an employer I wouldn't dream of it since you wouldn't have a leg to stand on if something happened.

It was amusing using them, as each lasted about ten whole seconds of cutting.

Although I quite often get stuff from bigger places that's out of date. Had 9x 150mm cutting discs the other day. I expect they only needed one to do a job but had to buy them in a pack of 10..

Keep in mind it depends on what your business is, in welding and fabrication yes it would be pretty easy to go through all your stock but you might be a kitchen fitter where you have staff that occasionally have to cut steel rail to size or whatever, it would be very easy for even a pack of 10 discs to be kicking around the van long past its expiry date, especially if its lost and then found again.

I remember when the company bought about a dozen new weldsets, each one came with Murex reg but as we used a plumbed in gas system they were consigned to the storage container until their shelf life expired, well most of them did

I've noticed m&s have taken a lot of used by dates from their products.

To save on needless food waste.
The missus was very confused midnight on the last day stuff was not fit for consumption, regularly said that I should just buy out of date food as it's cheaper, rather than waiting until it's out of date before I eat it.

When we get discs on our delivery. I always check the date on them and put the newer ones to the back So they are rotated properly. It's not official, but more for my piece of mind.

if your an employer and playing by all the rules in a blame storming culture ,,, so be it .

I would not be getting rid of any discs with use by on for my personal use ,,
Argon regs I only buy when they are out of date to start with .
My diving regs I service myself ,,,
Food I sniff , and look at , with chicken and pork being the only exceptions , even then a day or two wont matter.

I like the idea that you still used them to get your 10 seconds worth, that’s what I would do
