We took our 95 year old neighbour to see his wife in hospital, they have a camera system that records your entry and exit, you pay at a kiosk. It was raining hard when we were leaving so we tried 2 kiosks inside the hospital but neither would work so we went to the one outside under a small shelter, it stated on the machine that it accepts cash or card and also states 'no receipt available' the charge was £5.50 which we paid with cash. luckily my wife had the foresight to tell me to take a picture of the screen with our reg number, date and time and amount due zero. Yesterday she received a letter from parking eye stating we had not paid and owed then £42 or £70 depending on how soon you pay! How could we have proved we had paid with cash if their machine doesn't give receipts??

These automated parking systems, and their methods for dealing with payments when there are issues, feel so unjust. The directors of these companies should be taken to court and end up in jail, for ripping off good, honest, kindly people.

To be fair these systems aren’t all bad our local hospital has the same system, a few weeks ago after an appointment due to the high stress of the situation I drove away without paying when I realised the next day I looked up the hospital parking and they had a dedicated phone number for missed payment obviously a common occurrence I told the my reg. they checked their records and I paid the appropriate fee all sorted in a couple of minutes

Had a weird one at Edinburgh airport last year. It was when the winds came in to London (Feb 2022?) and I got stranded there.
I'd paid ~£30 for parking for a single day at Edinburgh airport so when I finally got home ~16 hours later I was shocked to discover the automated machine wanted £90 to let me out for the overstay.

I put my card in, fizzed with anger and reconciled myself that at least I could claim it back from work.

But the charge never went through. Dunno if it was a glitch or if common sense hit Edinburgh Airport given all the delays (which seems unlikely!)

I always pay by debit card after they tried to sting me . I had paid using an Asda voucher. I eventually got let off after I asked them to prove they had sent the parking charge notice. I had only received the debt collection agency letters.

Sent them back a copy of the card transaction with a time stamp, along with a note asking for a letter to say they were wrong. Funnily enough, they dropped the fine as it was issued incorrectly, and no letter.

Waiting for another, admittedly I forgot to pay, and drove out, no barriers. Realised as I was driving out, went straight back in, spoke to the attendant through an intercom, to get 'Too late, fine is already in the post'. Lucky for both of us he was hidden behind the intercom with that attitude.
Paid the fee for the second session, and left. (After much swearing and nearly ripping the door off the hinges) Parked up round the corner, walked back in, put my reg in the machine again and amended the entrance time manually to cover the first session. If there became an issue, I have got a time stamp from my card transaction, and the fee paid was the amount to cover all day, up to the second exit time stamp. Not had anything yet.


I wonder how many ££ they make from issuing incorrect fines that don't get disputed, or not allowing someone to simply pay after a genuine mistake.

One of the reasons that these parasites proliferate is the mistaken belief that they issue "fines". They do not! What they issue is a speculative civil invoice for alleged parking services. That invoice has no more and no less validity than one that you get from your builders' merchant after a short delivery and can be challenged in exactly the same way.

A fine is a CRIMINAL penalty which can only be issued by a government department. No private entity may issue penalties, which is why these invoices are dressed up to look similar but are Parking CHARGE Notices.

the scam also runs back to dvla who also got caught as well as fines was wrongly named

whilst everyone got a fine dvla who make millions out of selling your details didnt even get a single fine

Not if you're actually paying the bill they won't.

Stoke hospital introduced a new parking ticket system when my mum was in there for a few months.

You originally had to go to the machine and enter your reg when you first arrived, give payment details, state how long you were staying, then you left when you needed to.

The new system you did that when you were leaving, not when you arrived .... except there was nothing to say the whole system had changed, so hundreds of people were trying to use the old method.

There were queues yard long, as people tried to incorrectly use the system. It was utter chaos, the system was so complicated people would take five minutes just trying to work out the process to pay for the ticket.

And one machine only took cash, the other only cards... but it was written in tiny letters at the bottom of the machine. I had to drop down nearly on my knees to be able to read the screens.

And the number of times we left and the system just didn't recognise our plate number, so the barrier didn't lift and I had to press the call button to get out....

3 times a week I drove my dad up there, for several hours each day. About £4 a time for parking, plus several sisters also went. So someone was earning mayne £50 a week from having my mum in their stroke unit for 3 months.

A friend works at a hospital. The hospital car park was sold off to a Dutch company, so it's not like the money even goes back into the NHS (or indeed the UK!) any more.

Clever people, these free marketeers.

Same with our local hospital, it's less than a 3 minute walk from the housing estate next door, so guess where a lot of people park.....

Tried to park in the hospital car park, but overcrowded is an understatement, even the blue badge holders were stretching things by parking on Red lines…some even had tickets posted on their screens…
I ended up parking off street on a road on a local estate….Got chatting to a local who said half don’t even pay the tickets….

Our hospital cark park is never full. Doesnt stop the streets filling up
