Old engine rebore and skim ?

Hi all. I am needing the other engine out of my boat to be rebored and skimmed. I am in Manchester and not finding it easy to get somewhere reliable or that can do both jobs needed. Ones i have found can either do just the heads or dont want to / cant do it or booked up for 6 months, i guess there good lol, so if need be ill wait for them.

It is a VP B20 block. Its old school around 1974. So standard car engine block.

Any good suggestions please folks so i can send out for quotes.

just me being cautious. its a good head aswell lol. I could get away with a rebore and skim of the block

just check it with micrometer blue on a surface plate or float glass . unless your going to get it crack tested as well

well dont have a surface plate or anything to check the head. Its more the block than anything i need doing.

Lancaster engines you’ll need a mortgage for. If it’s just a rebore there’s a guy I use in Stockport that does in situ boring, comes out to you. I wouldn’t fanny around with the head being skimmed unless you really needed to. That being said whenever I’ve had a head done I’ve usually popped into a local machining outfit and bunged the lads 20 quid to do it over lunch

I've had a few things done at Quasar Engineering in Stockport, just near Portwood roundabout (M60 J27) on Mersey St. Quite a old school place, no website so you'll need to ring them, but I've always found them decent.
Where are you getting pistons from if you're doing a rebore?

To them its just another Volvo engine block, they wouldn't know or care what was bolted onto it to marinise it.

Never mention its for a boat usually everthing is then double the price

A lot of these engine machine shops turn out some pretty shoddy work, owning a bore micrometer is not always a good thing.Just saying.

You can’t just bore a block, you need to hone it to size, so you need the pistons ideally. When I used to do this it would be £200 plus pistons (some time ago). Block or head skim £30...
I still have the kit but not the time.
@8ob is right, some “reconditioned” engines I took apart were shocking - 5 thou bore tapers, 30 thou bores fitted with 20 thou pistons etc..
