Maroon/burgundy/dark reds

I want to order some dark red enamel paint. I can order anything ral or BS. I don't have paint chips though and trying to look for examples of paint codes is hopeless.

So, has anyone painted anything in a ral/bs dark red type colour and has a photo of what it actually looked like?

Main candidate right now is ral3007 red black.
I want something dark, rich, but not too brown or purple looking.

Tricky colour to get just how you want, especially ordering remotely and relying on a screen!

The burgundy used on 1960s rolls Royce looks great, but I can't order that as it's an old ici colour.

It's just for painting a lathe, if it was a big expensive job I'd be ordering samples or getting stuff matched.

It's really tempting. I'm no stranger to mixing paint. But I'd probably want to order 3 or 4 colours and at £16 a tin, when I only need 1 tin, it gets expensive!

It's very nice but a bit light for what I have in my minds eye, but it's very helpful as it's another that was on my radar.

This picture on tonys site is kind of what I had in mind.
I'm quite flexible, I'm not trying to match anything, just don't want to look at it after and think it's too light (too dark would be ok), or for it to jist look brown, or really purple.

Might be worth getting one close enough & darkening it yourself. That above will have darkened somewhat with age, so likely won't match up to anything current.

Always an option.
I'm giving myself 2 shots at it. I'll order one and if I don't like it, try and use it to judge the best replacement.
If I don't like either, then tough.
Not spending loads of time.and money on lathe paint choice!

Ral3007 looks close according to these Google images

But apparantly this is too and it looks a bit grim

I'm going to hazard a guess that's powder though, powder always looks a bit rubbish for depth of colour.

I will. Get the shade right and it can be a fantastic colour.

Might be worth asking them about the ici RR colour then.

I had a similar issue recently, bought a RAL colour chart, about £25.00, well worth it.

Rover Bordeaux Red. But that's probably an old ICI colour too.

LMS locomotive red ? Now there's a heritage colour for you !

Prices vary according to the number of swatches. K7, about £15 , is fairly comprehensive.

From that, 3007 is very dark, nothing like the lathe example pictured, so maybe 3006 or 3005.

4004 or 4007 might be possibilities.
