I have done alot of petroleum licensing throughout Ireland on a professional capacity.

And these break ALL the rules! But because they have operated before and if they don't change it I guess that's how they get by and I can't blame them either.

The garage I served my time at sold petrol .
There was a part time pump attendant .
He was a retired seagoing engineer , great bloke.
He worked until 2 30 then i had to do the pumps .
It was a bit of a pain as I wanted to be in the workshop .
It was all part of my training as i got to speak to our customers .
This lasted 12 months until a new apprentice was employed .
Christmas was always good gifts or drink and money .
Topping up engine oil , coolant , and tyre pressures was also part of the job .
Happy days indeed .

There were a couple of shops a few miles from me that had that setup. New regulations about siting of fuel tanks were the death of them. As far as I know, the tanks were ok if they remained in good condition, but the slightest problem meant they couldn't be replaced in-situ and there was simply nowhere else for them to be. One shop shut about a decade ago and the second just last year or so.

I remember big old land yachts that had the filler cap behind the license plate.
You swung it down, opened the cap, and had to lay the nozzle sideways.

Propping them up over a drum to get the dregs out,

And, if you squashed the little bit left at the edge after the 'peel off' strip was off with a pair of pliers, you could get even more out - maybe only a teaspoonful per can, but if you're doing maaaany cans it all mounted up.

I think on the cars I remember, the bumper was cut out, the plate (and filler)
were very low to the ground.

IIRC the Cresta/Viscount had the same, and the Humber Snipe you unscrewed the reflector at the bottom of the light lense.

This is literally round the corner from a massive Tesco supermarket and filling station and their fuel is almost always more expensive than Tesco yet they seem to have plenty of loyal local customers.
As you say, only because its been like that for decades can they do it. Imagine a new planning application, "I want to install petrol pumps on the footpath with fuel delivery hoses that swing out over the footpath to refuel cars parked at the side of the road". Yep can't see that happening.

Yep, I used to fill up regularly at the second shop, as it was simply more convenient in some ways. Plus, their fuel was generally the same quality as the much larger modern fuel station around the corner. Certainly all came from the same suppliers.

Cheap too... those were the days.

We have an attended station locally. Still sells red diesel and kero from the pump as well as road fuel. I also buy my coal from him. For coal he often works out cheaper than the big online companies. Red is often cheaper than my neighbours get it for in bulk and diesel and petrol are often cheaper than the local tesco. I try and support them by getting something when passing as these places are slowly dying out. They were a godsend when I was changing my kero tank at home as I could buy small quantities at reasonable prices for my temporary tanks... the local oil suppliers shut their pumps down about five years ago so its a 500l minimum order by tanker from them.

It was quite normal when I lived in the Philippines. The guys in my regular 'gas station' would rush to serve me as I always gave a 20peso tip.

In the U.K. I can't remember seeing it since the 70's.

My '68 Chevy Nova had it behind the rear license plate.

I recall being in our family car as a child at an attended filling station locally in the 90s. I think that lasted until about 2000 then the station closed for good. The owner, Finlay was a gentleman.

When I was growing up in the 80's there was a local attended service station much the same, sold solid fuel, oil, kindling and logs.
Down a side street amongst a row of houses and business's close to the center of town. It was very tight, you could just get two cars in one either side of the pumps. That had the drive over bell.
Mum used to go there every week on a Thursday after we finished school and get fuel for the week, think she had a crush on the attendant.
That place must have gone in the early 90's when Tesco's arrived.
One of those places that had a bit of character.
